my old teacher in KSD told Olathe Daily news explain about budget says its lots more money about over million or billion for my old school budget! because of students left behind since every last years ago about 1980's till now! but the elementary teacher told Olathe Daily news and also my old supt same things to explain but my old supt says will handle about budget and lots of mores because im graduate at KSD 2000 in KS but im also alumni for nearly 9 years that why but i dont think my old school should CLOSE peroid! but my old school been still kept since 1886 for 123 years

Oh god no..........why not cut more pork? I mean Deaf Schools can provide kids with a real home and teachers who actually know how to teach, instead of generic sped teachers.

What's wrong with mainstreaming?

There are several major flaws in the Deaf Education system that needs to be repaired. English comprehension levels are not up to par with the norm and unfortunately this is where mainstreaming works.

I personally believe mainstreaming works wonders although so many ASL radicals will disagree with me on this.

Yes, I come from a strong ASL and Deaf family background. We all firmly believe mainstreaming works and the Bi-Bi approach does as well.

I have seen too many children get referred to our program after falling far behind from being mainstreamed. Their needs werent met due to educators not having the training to understand on how to meet deaf children's needs so they get left out in the classroom too often. Too often, the deaf children either withdraw into themselves or act out leading to inaccurate labels. I see it every year...

I experienced I am very really go to mainstream about to meeting. I think really hearing people I think so getting enjoy to hearing people. i think so getting plan do I am set up ready to getting happy. I hope with deaf people in school

Quite a lot. Teachers who are inexperianced with teaching dhh kids and who lump them in with "ummmm who's President so and so" kids
The fact that most dhh kids have been mainstreamed but have not seen a rise in literacy. Hell my best friend was mainstreamed and her reading comprehension levels are so awful. (and she thinks she got a better education) She was Oral, but her writing looks almost like a illiterate's....her syntax and grammar is horrible.

Mainstreaming is lonely. When it works it works great but when 75% of the CI kids end up back in a deaf school, a school with falling enrollment because of mainstreaming, you have a problem. What if there was no deaf school to go/return to? And those are CI statistics. The numbers for aided kids must be similar. I have met several mainstreamed deaf people who liked it for the reasons you stated but they work at a deaf school and all their friends are deaf. We did a mainstream trial for our deaf son and at the end he said it was OK but was happy to return to his deaf school. I just wanted to share this info which may or may not be accurate. An Audiologist gave me that 75% figure.

Budget cuts are all over not only deaf schools. Its hitting the mainstream as well, teachers have been given pink slip notices for layoffs and those with the most seniority will remain on the job.

I heard that services that fully meet deaf children's needs in the mainstreaming programs are being cut. If deaf schools and deaf services in public schools r being cut or closed, how will the deaf children get the education they rightfully deserve? Just too bad....

Agreed. In my state too, the first personel the districts want to cut are the teachers and staff that serve the D/deaf, Blind, DeafBlind, and so on.

Any news on the Scranton School in PA?
Did their protests and request for meeting with their Governor work?
