Paul Martin has completed his mission to be part of Australian history - as the first born deaf man to sail solo around Australia.

Aboard his 30 foot yacht, the Amber Rose, Paul began his solo journey on April 7th 2009 starting from his home of Wollongong and docking back in Wollongong Harbour at 6pm on Saturday 29th of May

Paul stopped off at Port Walcott (40 km north of Karratha) late September, his arrival accompanied by a strong craving for fresh bread and sausages.

This craving was recognised by Wickham local and member of the Port Walcott Volunteer Marine Rescue Service, Ian Anderton.

Ian ferried out fresh supplies to the thankful sailor and imparted some helpful local advice on weather conditions and safe passages for the immediate journey.

You can listen to his interview from Karratha midway through his trip by listening to the mp3 above.

Paul had potential disasters awaiting him on the trip- including a tendency to sleepwalk.

"I've had one or two sleep walkings."

"While at the cock pit, I opened my eyes, and said 'what am I doing here? Wow! I better go back to bed, forget it.'"

Paul says the challenge of being a deaf sailor is not too great because of the use of an electronic hearing aid - however most of his communications are done through text messaging.

On first impression he looked like Alby Mangles with a salty tan and war wounds, his vessel looking like a pirate ship with the skeleton of a giant mackerel adorning the stern.

He says the mackerel is a souvenir to take back to home to show his son the big fish he caught on the biggest adventure of his life.
