Are there any ADers who are licensed pilots? Just curious.

not me, but.........someday I would love to fly Cessna over the Denali Nat'l Park in Alaska, and so on. There are several deaf pilots in Alaska.

I want to meet some - There is a ground school near me - tuition is $900. I know a certified pilot (actually, more than a few) who have all offered to take me up to get my hours after ground school. They are hearing though.

i know a few deaf pilots personally, they all tell me to get certified...

dunno if its worth the cost right now. maybe soon....

few rare on something pretty on community! I notice it on not sure pretty worlds I think s have professional

I wish I had the time and money to get a pilot license. I don't know what I would do with it except sit in my car in traffic and pretend I could take off and fly.

Oh wait, I can do that now without a license! :)

this is related to the topic - hubby took helicopter lesson once. He flies RC including heli's and had a great time with the lesson. He'd love to get his private pilot's license. I wanted to try the chopper lesson too but we thought it was only for members of his RC club to try <I'm not> but actually it was a bit more open than that, including a member who simply bought a spectator-only flight as a gift for his grandma. So the lesson/flights were actually very individualistic.

I find this a very interesting question. I haven't flown in a while but when I did, often I would end up having pain in my ears from pressurization problems on landing. Other times, even if it wasn't painful, I would find that I wouldn't hear as well for as long as a week.

I do better if I remember to:

  • Not wear my hearing aids on take off or landing
  • Take an antihistamine before take off
  • Take some nasal drops before take off
  • Chew gum on take off and landing

I suppose in my case it probably means that I have something wrong with my eustachian tubes.

Do pilots have to communicate with air traffic controllers on take off and landings? I'd be curious to know how they do it.

I think owning a small plane and running freight and passengers in the outskirts of Alaska would be a fun job! :)

But in my particular case, it might also be a painful one. :(

From what I understand, you have to communicate above a certain elevation (10,000 feet maybe?) and most airports do not have a control tower.

nope. majority of airports do not have traffic controller nor radio communication. It's a rule of thumb for ALL pilots that in case of no radio communication during take-off/landing/flying aka "uncontrolled airport", they go by VFR (Visual Flying Rules). It's exactly same thing for mariners and drivers. Very simple.

many Alaskans know how to fly.

Can't afford it yet ? Is helicopter cheaper than small plane? :laugh2:

oh I meant the training cost. I just wanna get licensed in it and I can't afford it yet cuz I've been focusing too much on my motorcycle hobby :)

Add the helicopter blade fan on your motorcycle :giggle: and there you fixed it.
