Hi guys,
I'm currently writing a novel in which the central character is Deaf. When I write her dialogue, I have written it in ASL as opposed to the other characters who dialogue in straight English.
I need some feedback as to whether this will read acurately or should I let her speak in a mixture of ASL and English as not to distract from the story for hearing readers.
As Deaf readers, would you want to read dialogue in straight ASL or would you prefer in literature to have the mixture for the flow of the story?
Also, if anyone would like to share experiences that you always wanted to see in a fiction novel and that are relatively common for accuracy, I'd love to include them. Of course to maintain privacy this would be general only for this is a work of fiction. This story for this character should highlight, without in any way defaming, the Deaf experience. The main theme of this work is a Deaf/Hearing relationship.
Thanks so much! Let me know if you have have any questions!
