It doesn't mean it is false, U could say depends, just like how you said 30 percent is possible, while the rest is up the air, but still it's not false. But, whatever you say.
Specifically, ASL (American Sign Language) isn't universal. You can't fly to Africa, use ASL, and expect every deaf person there to understand what you're saying. There are deaf people who don't use sign language.1. Sign language is universal.
Duh, I think we all know the answer to this one. I'm deaf. I can drive. Period.2. Deaf people can't drive.
Anyone can have a job regardless of their intelligence. There might be a deaf person who was never educated in school, but he can simply carry a bunch of boxes from one truck to another without the need to think, "What's 2 + 2?"3. Deaf people are not very bright, so they can't have jobs.
This depends on whether that person got speech therapy. In a way, everyone can talk... in their own way. A deaf person may not speak well, but they can still talk. If you're referring to speaking "perfect English"... that's impossible. Everyone speaks differently, with different styles, grammar, accent, language, etc. I speak Spanish. He speaks English. Does that mean I can't talk?4. Deaf people can't talk.
When you say "use"... you're taking advantage of the phone's purpose. The purpose of the phone is for one person to communicate with another person in any manner. It can be by voice or by TTY or (if a cell phone) by text messaging. While a deaf person may not be able to hear or speak clearly through a phone or cell phone, that deaf person can still use the phone for TTY or the cell phone to send a text message.5. Deaf people can't use the phone.
Completely correct hearing loss? *falls out of the chair laughing my ass off* Seriously, you may get CI... but when you take it off... what are you? You're still deaf. Period.6. Hearing aids, cochlear implants, etc. completely correct hearing loss.
This is a common misconception by hearing people. This is like talking. It depends on how that deaf person was raised. Some deaf children learn to read lips while others are raised strictly on sign language alone. I was raised both ways, so I can read lips and use sign language. Some may do one or the other or neither or both.7. Deaf people can read lips.
This depends on the type of hearing loss a person has. Hearing people have full hearing and they have the muscles/nerves to control what they can and can't hear. However, deaf people have to rely on assistive devices to help them hear. With that device, they're stuck hearing what the hearing aid hears... not what their ear can hear. So, what the hearing aid hears... they hear. Of course, we could simply turn off our hearing aids when we don't want to listen any more. There's our selective hearing.8. Deaf people have selective hearing.
Nah. I was born hearing, but became deaf around the age of 1. Some people are born deaf and wome become deaf later in life. No, it's not just old farts... but us young'uns as wells.9. Deafness is an old person's problem.
This is like speech therapy. Some are put through speech therapy and some aren't. Some are put in regular school and some are put in special school. However, a school is still a school. What actually defines a "special school"? What makes a special school so "special"? Does it mean you're stupid? Does it mean you're gifted? Does it mean you're too smart? It could be anything. I could say that I was raised in a regular school since I took classes with hearing students. However, I could also probably say that I was raised in a special school because I had an interpreter in my classes and that's something you don't always see in schools full of hearing kids. Does that make me "special"?10. All deaf people are taught in special schools.
Actually, about #7, it's still FALSE. It goes same as hearing cannot read lip - flawless
Why?
Only 30% successful on read lip while the rest are guess up.
Seriously, it's screw up, "sex" and "six" look so same the art of lip is.
Anyway, all the questions are FALSE.
True or false?
Here is my answer on your question.
1. Sign language is universal.
False
2. Deaf people can't drive.
False, look at me... I can drive... The people in some poor countries think deaf can't drive, married, have children, etc...
3. Deaf people are not very bright, so they can't have jobs.
False, don't point finger to just deaf people... it's also same with hearing as well who have the problem. It's depend on people's moviation...
4. Deaf people can't talk.
False... like what I say before - Depend on their own moviation... Without parent's/expert's positive help/support then they can't speak/talk.
5. Deaf people can't use the phone.
Neutral...
I withnessed in real life that some deaf people with HA or CI can use the phone, without the help from HA or CI then they can't use the phone.
6. Hearing aids, cochlear implants, etc. completely correct hearing loss.
False, HA and CI itself can't correct hearing loss but the people themselves with the support from their parents/experts.
7. Deaf people can read lips.
Neutral... I would say depend... All what I know is there're common for deaf people to read hearing's lips and watch deaf's lip movement when they sign here in most Europe countries.
8. Deaf people have selective hearing.
False
9. Deafness is an old person's problem.
False
10. All deaf people are taught in special schools.
False, it's not just all deaf people but hearing as well. We have special school for hearing and deaf children here in Germany who have problem with their literacy skills and also education skill as well. I hate when anyone point their negative finger on deaf people... They need to search to find out themselves that hearing people did the same as well... I would say SOME deaf and SOME hearing who have the problem with their literacy skills etc.
DO YOU KNOW THE TRUTH?
Sad truth is some people are ignorant and focus negative about deaf people...
Deaf people read lips in a 100% true in all case? Going by a binary logic, I think not, so therefore its false
Vampy said:I would have to say that all are false... if the questions were viewed from a specific point of view.
1. True
2. False - I, for one, am among many licensed deaf drivers.
3. False - I don't tolerate this kind of stereotyping. Being deaf makes you dumb? Get the hell out of here!
4. False
5. False
6. Neutral - It really depends on each individual
7. Neutral - see #6
8. False
9. False - Not only old people, from babies to seniors have deafness
10. False - The emphasizing word in bold above is all, since not all deaf people are taught in special schools. There's mainstreaming, home schooled, maxstreamed, list goes on.
How come most members here put down "false" on "Deaf people can read lips." They can read lips, what are you guys talking about??!!
Deaf people can read lips.... Not all Deaf people can read lips so I put it down as false. It have to be true 100% of times before I can put it down as true.
A hearing person could be saying to you... I know a deaf person who can read lips, why can't you?? I don't like that at all. Next time somebody say that to you, tell them that you know a hearing person (interpreter or friend or CODA) can sign so why can't that person sign????
One other thing about the universality of ASL is that it is probably more universal than any other sign language.
People in Britain don't use ASL.
I find it very interesting that almost if not all said false to "has selective hearing" I see it as true cause everybody (hearing and those that has CI or hearing aids) can choose what they want to hear or not. They may "hear" but choose to ignore what other poeple are saying and alot of hearing poeple does that all the time!
