Deaf-mute youth thrown out of bus by conductor-Kolkata -Cities-The Times of India

A deaf-mute youth lay unconscious on the road after being dragged down from a bus by its conductor on Sunday. Shyamsundar Sarkar’s only fault was that he had banged his head against the bus wall, as he had a splitting headache.

Sarkar lay at the Ballyghat bus stand for about an hour till local people and police took him to hospital.
Sunday’s incident took place in a bus on route 3, which was plying from Bagbazar to Serampore. Sarkar was going home in Hooghly’s Goghat. As the bus descended from Bally bridge and stopped at the Ballyghat bus stand, local people saw its conductor dragging Sarkar down. The bus then sped away.

Eyewitnesses said Sarkar, dressed in jeans and a blue shirt, with a bag slung across his shoulder, apparently had a splitting headache, as he was banging his head in a bid to get some relief from the pain. Moments later, the youth fell unconscious at the bus stop. This led locals and police to conclude that he had incurred the wrath of the conductor for complaining of illness.

Seeing Sarkar fall to the ground, locals carried him to a side of the road and sprinkled water on his face. They tried other means to help him regain consciousness, such as pouring water on his head and giving mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. "But when nothing worked, in spite of an hour’s try, we informed Bally police. A police team, led by ASI Jayanta Mahanto, rushed to the spot," said Asim Kumar Das, a local.

Police found an identity card mentioning Sarkar’s challenged status with his address on it from the youth’s shirt. He was taken to Uttarpara State General Hospital in a taxi. The youth regained consciousness only later at night. He is recuperating, police said. Mahanto then stopped another bus on route 3 and took down the details, including the name of the conductor, of the bus that had left Bagbazar before it. Police are now looking for the guilty conductor.

Sunday’s incident is the latest in a string of incidents involving misbehaviour by bus conductors. On May 27 this year, a conductor of a Balurghat-bound state bus pulled a blind woman by the hand and forced her to get off a seat which, he insisted, was reserved for him. Five days before that, a conductor of a Kolkata bus had pushed off a physically challenged youth for not having small change.
