This issue will be raised at the WFD. Some WFD Board reps have been working on the UN Convention of Disabled Persons. This is to establish an International recognition of disabled persons rights.

As for the question of helping other Deaf in other countries, it would be better if you invest the time to combat leglisations in USA that make issues or problems for other countries need to be more flexible.

ie. Parallel Exporting of goods to other countries from USA.

This creates problems for NZ Deaf as DVD's are a source of captions. When a Box Office movie is released in Cinemas - countries have to wait 9 months before they can rent out the DVD. There is no waiting period if the DVD is purchased directly - but this is very expensive for Deaf here. Therefore Deaf in countries whom the US is combating piracy against have no choice but to buy the illegal copies to watch what can not be provided in Cinemas. I have a case with the Human Rights Commission in NZ against the Cinemas non provision of captioned Movies.

Ways Deaf really can start helping in US is to combat the laws that create problems for other countries Deaf.

Secondly - an International standard of disability rights needs to be established to recognise this need so that Deaf for example can get the access they need without being termed "socially delayed".

Without the power of such leglislation - helping will only just be talk... if action were to happen - its better to put the energy into this arena as I am doing.

The term 'developed countries' is ambigious. For example NZ is termed as a developed country, yet - Deaf here don't have a Relay Service, there is low rate of captioned content on TV, few Interpreters, Educational barriers etc....

So therefore the definition of 'developed' in sense in a hearing thing for their things... not for Deaf...

If you are attending WFD - I will be there... staying at the Lord Berri (I think)...

If you want the challenge of something different, I work for an organisation (gotta finish the website) that supports Deaf with intelluctual dor developmental disabilities within the community as a live-in person. Mt Tabor Trust is based in Auckland, New Zealand we do have long term volunteers from overseas.

To get an idea of what we do - have a look at this site - it is the same philisophy www.larche.com

If you are seriously interested - email me at rockland@ihug.co.nz

It sounds interesting. I am surprised that larche organization is established in Cleveland, Ohio where I used to live. I am considering for applying for job position in East Coast once I get MS degree in Rehabilitation Counseling for the Deaf at San Francisco State University. I prefer to work in NYC, Washington, DC, Boston, Cleveland, or wherever I get job there. I have enough of West Coast already.

one of my major is also rehab counseling. I used to be from Red wood city close to palo alto but anyways, I am in CSUS and any advice for me in that major???

wonderbum - sounds great!!! I would like to represent my country Iran ;) for WFD how would I be able to do that?? I also went to the Iran National Center for the Deaf in Tehran last week it was lots of fun!!

You need to contact the National Organisation of Deaf in Iran to check to see if they are a member of WFD. If they are, then you need to be elected by them as the Delegate to attend.

You can still attend as an ordinary member (not have voting rights) and make contact with the Networks there to get the support you need to support your home country.

Where abouts are you living at the moment?

Do you plan on going to Montreal?

I am in Tehran right now silly, will be back in the USA in a few weeks. I am pretty sure Iran is not part of the WFD, but I will ask. I wish I could let the WFD know about Iran's problem with deaf and lack of services.

Is this lack Cleric based/dominated? Or lacked by other means? Just curious...

You can let WFD know about these problems anytime by writing to them. Also find out as much as you can about Irans contacts with other countries or the Arabic Deaf Community within the Middle east region.

It would pay to do a search in Arabic... I doubt much is said in English on the net. I will do a search in English and you do the search in Arabic... we'll see what we come up with.

Where in USA do you live as well?

I already went to Montreal silly plus it is expensive to attend the WFD :( anyways, I am not that involved in the Deaf world yet, but will learn some more about how it is for Deaf Iranians. Anyways, I hope you let them know about me when you go see them :) make sure to say salaam (hello) to them :)
