A 14-year-old deaf boy went missing last month after stabbing his mother inside the family’s home last month. He’s now charged with her murder, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office announced Wednesday.

Mitchell Evan Daughtry of Jacksonville, has been charged not only with murder but with auto theft in connection to the homicide of his mother, Pamela Daughtry, 42. According to Florida law, he will be tried as an adult. He is being held without bond for the murder and on $25,000 bond for the charge of stealing his family’s car after the murder.

Police say that Daughtry was “angry” leading up to his mother’s death because of the incarceration of his father. It appears that he blamed his mother, though it’s not clear yet why the father was imprisoned.

Pamela Daughtry’s daughter found her stabbed to death in the kitchen of the family’s home. “She had been stabbed multiple times. She was covered with a blanket,” Lt. Gallaher of Jacksonville police said.
Before the murder, Daughtry’s daughter had received a text from her mother asking her to come by the house and speak with her brother because he was “angry.”

“When she saw the message, she went immediately to the house and discovered that her mother had been killed, and the vehicle was missing and so was Mitchell,” Lt. Gallaher said. Daughtry was already contacting friends and family by that time, saying he was in South Florida.

“During those texts and phone calls, he indicated that he had killed his mother,” Lt. Gallaher said.

Police in Miami-Dade County finally located Daughtry and took him into custody. He was committed to a mental health facility under Florida’s Baker Act because he had tried to take his own life with pills. Following his release, he was placed in the custody of a Department of Juvenile Justice facility. Wednesday afternoon he was taken to the Duval County Pretrial Detention Facility.

Neighbor Khrissy Atkinson described Pamela Daughtry, whom she knew for 17 years, as a loving mother.

“I went over to my next door neighbor’s to find out what happened and they told me it was Pam,” Atkinson said. “That’s when I found out she was dead. I can’t believe it. She was always there for her kids and it was just sad. She was a good mother.”

Kaitlynn Durham, a friend of Mitchell’s, says Daughtry was heading into ninth grade.

“He’s just different. An amazing person. His eyes are as blue as the sky. That’s really how it looks,” said Durham. “He was the quiet type. He can’t hear. He used his mouth to read lips and stuff. I would have never thought he would kill someone…he was too sweet. He just needs a little love, he’s not crazy. He just needs help.”

Durham also described Mitchell as “happy,” but his social media posts reveal a loner who was confused. On the day his mother was found, he published an Instagram post saying, “I can’t take this anymore.”

Wow. That boy must love his dad. :(

Still, his behavior is inexcusable.

Very sad. I hope that he get's help. No sure how I feel about trying him as an adult when he's only 14 and obviously diturbed.

I don't think he should be tried as adult. What if the problem is communication. He might not have a good understanding of what is right and wrong.

I agreed, and this is one of other reason why I don't jump in and said inexcusable. At that age, they don't have good judgement if something really, really went wrong.

I wondering why dad is in prison?

A possible scenario:

Mom was an abused wife and finally turned in her husband to authorities, hence the jail sentence.

Son blames mom for dad's incarceration, just as his dad probably always blamed the mom for her own abuse. ("She made me hit her with all her nagging.")

Son knows that dad always resolved his anger against mom by using physical violence. That's the pattern he's used to. His violence against mom escalates, he grabs a knife, and finally expresses all his anger against mom. (As indicated by multiple, "overkill" stab wounds.) Still, it's his mom, so he covers her with a blanket.

He knows he's done wrong (consciousness of guilt), so he tries to escape by stealing the car.

When he's caught, he tries to escape via suicide.

ask yourself question, what kind of communication is being used between boy and mom?

communication is the key, and there is bunch of questions around communications.

This boy wear a CI...and his father is in jail for child molestation, among other charges....but not to his Son....or so far the news said the boy was not molested by his Father....the Mother was the 1 that had her husband arrested (from what I've read)....and the boy loved his Father very much, as they did a lot of things together, fishing, sports, etc. ....The boy blamed his Mother for all of this....and the rest is horrific...

It be wrong judge him as adult he should not go to court at all..This very disurbed child and needs be treated as such..The act of covering her with blanket shows some remorse. With right help this lad can be saved his punishment is think about his act for rest of his life.Must be young people units that can treat him

Oh, thats bad, wondering mother is oral or talk with hands?

I think he shouldn't be tried as adult. My son is 14 right now and I can see how mature he gets BUT with hearing loss, I don't think he is anywhere near my son and he is less likely to understand exact what is going on.

it very sad situation...what happening with the dad has he been released on bail in view of this?

Don't know Caz...but the comments made about this deaf boy from Hearing people??...Terrible!...Some said he looked evil...some said to go ahead and shoot him....I stood up for the kid...and one person said..."I don't care of he is deaf...I didn't get along with my Mother either, but I didn't stab her to death"....:hmm:

Not sure, but feel this kid was questioned without an intrepretor and was also Baker Acted without counsel.

Baker Acted? So there was mental health issues?

:hmm: do you think someone who repeatedly stabbed their mother until dead could possibly be mentally sound??

Yeah, but like bipolar etc as opposed to something organic like psychopathy a la Buffalo Bill (from Silence of the Lambs) or like that man who kept his daughter in a basement.

And I hope if it's something scary like psychopathy that they can somehow make sure he never gets out of jail... It really does scare me that there are some real life psychopaths who get their records cleaned simply b/c they are young.
