Hi There, First of all I want to take a moment and introduce myself... I am currently attending school to become an Intervention Specialist and am interested in learning more about the Deaf culture. Anyone that would be willing to chat and help to educate me, I would greatly appreciate it!

I have read a lot about the Deaf culture, but thought that by asking some general questions I could get a more "real life" versus text book feel!

What do you think charcterizes someone who relates to the Deaf culture versus the hearing culture? Do you find that there are negative sterotypes amongst your peers if you do not closely identify with the Deaf culture?

Again, it is my hope to not offend or pry to much, I am just trying to learn more!

:welcome: to AllDeaf forum.

Many hearing people don't really understand Deaf Culture. We are Deaf/Hard of Hearing and we understand with ASL better as it is visual much better than lipreading. We studied our history of Deaf people who make us be unique and special in our own way. We also love to laugh at jokes about funny things happening with deaf people meeting up with hearing people (usually mime while using ASL) and many hearing people don't understand the jokes. Go figure.

A lot of hearing people would rather not have us use Deaf Culture except a few like you. They don't understand why it is important for us be in silence than hearing the sounds or environment sounds with hearing aids or CI. If you watch the Youtube - Gallaudet University - film in this post here in the forum. You will see that is the Deaf Culture that we are comfortable with very much. We are free to communicate with ASL and boy, this is really beautiful. I would not have suffer if they would only provide the accommodations like ASL and notetakers so that we can get a good grades in the mainstream schools, but no they won't allow us to use the accommodations at all back in the old days of 1950 to 1970. Things change a little bit for a while but we are still back as usual just like in the 1970 or earlier. Deaf Culture give us hope and being at home with the Deaf communities to make more easier to understand better than with hearing people. That is my opinion. Everyone is different with their opinions. :)
