David Phan, Utah Teen, Commits Suicide Outside School

What is strange is that there was ABSOLUTELY NOTHING said about the nature of bullying. Was it because he was LGTB, or was it because he was Asian? I didn't see the video. Is Utah that straight-laced?

At any rate, he had bravery to end what seemed to be an interminable situation in his life. Even though it wasn't the way it ought to have turned out, I have to admire his bravery.

Because I'm trans, I feel like I'm on the wrong planet altogether. I don't belong here.

That's very sad and we need have anti-bullying measurement.
Raising awareness of bullying is GOOD, but the thing is it won't work in Utah and other conservative states. The anti gay mentality is too ingrained in the culture there. One thing that could help is maybe give the kids struggling with bullying an outplacement, like they do with special ed kids. Social emotional development is important too, and kids can't learn when they are being bullied!

Sigh. People who operate within the dominant power structure in that part of the country give so much money to keep the power structure going that they don't have enough money to set up a private school system for their kids. They are obsessed with control, including control of the public school system. The culture is obsessed with looking under every rock for signs of nonconformity. To my knowledge, there are no charter schools available to protect the most vulnerable from the chicken-pecking that goes on.

I can't say enough about it, without going ballistic, so I had better stop now.

Huh? Charter schools? What do charter schools have to do with anything??!?! That's too specialized for charter schools......Too bad Harvey Milk doesn't have a boarding program for kids from really conservative states:

Well, the dominant church in that state has private institutions for bullies, rapists, drug dealers, child sex abusers, and homosexual kids. You know-- to rehabilitate them. And some of them are in California.

I am talking about charter schools, not influenced by the dominant culture, which would take all categories of kids who would be vulnerable to the pressures of that culture.

Another solution would be for that state to let go of control and have tuition vouchers. However, that would require the powers that be to recognize cultural diversity.

Are you saying that homosexual kids are bad?

No, she is saying Mormons expect everyone to conform to the norm and are not tolerant of differences.

Oh I see, I have a hard time to understand about what MCB is saying.

That doesn't surprise me.......the Mormons are EXTREME!!!!!
But the thing is charter schools don't really work that way...its a good idea...but maybe a better idea might be for a GLB organization to start a school/ group home for GLB teens who have been bullied.

Special Ed? You're joking right? I was in special ed my entire life...did absolutely nothing to stop bullying. If special ed is "the solution" think twice.....you'll need more than outplacement to stop this...maybe hidden cameras and YouTube is going to the only solution.

I tend to be ambivalent in my writing. A result of having had to live among the ass-holes. :giggle: Sorry for my caution.

GLB organization to start a school/ group home for GLB teens who have been bullied.
Might be difficult in small towns.

Southern Baptists and Mormons come from similar roots. Southern Baptists don't even claim that nutcase in Topeka KS. Mormon-supported prejudices are broader in scope.

For instance, they are even prejudiced against celibates. In Mormonism, every one has to marry (heterosexually) in order to gain the highest level of heaven. If you don't marry, there has to be something terribly wrong with you-- therefore, celibates are immediately rumored to be homosexual; it doesn't matter what feelings of attraction are inside. Obviously celibates hate the opposite sex, and are therefore homosexual.

The biggest and most secret prejudice is against descendants of those who participated in the death of Joseph Smith-- which has sparked my crusade, since I am one of them. Contrary to Mormon belief, curses, and bigotry, there are plenty of us. :D Except most of us don't know about it.
