I am curious to know if you know any one who was born deaf and raised into adult and then received CI. I am talking about those who are profoundly deaf and never heard sound be4. I would like to know of their experience having CI. I know it was discussed4before, but I am a newbie and I would appreciate your help.

Thank You.

Well.......prelingals who have NEVER heard sound, even as a baby or even with a hearing aid tend to not do as well as prelingals who may have had some exposure to sound. I know even over at Hearing Exchange, which is CI Central, they admit that results with CI are very very mixed.
My best advice is to keep your expectations low. Make sure you're not buying into any possible hype.

My son, Fragmenter, was considering getting a CI and he fits the profile you brought up. After his son got implanted, Frag decided to wait and focus on his son first.

I wonder if LuciaDisturbed would fit this profile? Yoo hoo, Lucia?

I wasn't born deaf, but I lost my hearing at 1-2 years old after too many ear infections that went undetected. I did wear HAs on and off til I was 10. I didn't get much benefit from the HAs, so I quit wearing them. So I guess I'm close enough? Since I haven't heard many sounds before at all (only the really loud ones). My loss is also very profound. Now I can't really hear anything at all.

It IS possible, but it will be harder for those of which profile you are speaking of. You would have to keep your expectations really low. My doc has very low expectations for me (even though my audiologist has higher expectations). All I am hoping for is to hear enviromental sounds and possibly music. It varies from person to person. Be prepared to do a lot of hard work.

I can't really say more as I don't have my CI yet, my surgery is October 11th. After I get my CI and I get turned on I will say more and I will comment on how I am doing from time to time as time progresses.

I fit into your description :) So is my brother.

Thanks, Lucia! Oct. 11 will be here before you know it! :hyper:

Gemtun, you say you and your brother fit the profile? Do either of you have CIs?

Lucia, I think actually you migth have an advantage over someone who NEVER heard sound. I mean I know it was a long time ago, but on the other hand your brain got some exposure to sound, the way a hearing person did. That might help you. I mean I think it might give you an advantage over for example, a congentially very profoundly deaf person, who NEVER was able to hear normally or get benifits from hearing aids.

Yes we both did. I got mine 2 years ago at age 37 and my brother got his when he was 32.
