Hello..I was reading the locked thread that one ADer created about asking the moderaters to re-open the religion threads. I noticed that in some postings, some people prefer it not to be re-opened cuz of the topics being too controversial and the bashing and bickering. I agree that bashing and bickering shouldnt happen but I disagree about a topic or subforum being too controversial. The reason...sometimes it is good to have heated debates+* from time to time cuz life is not always going to be about just safe topics. Ugly things happen and it is good to learn from the heated discussions. I am trying to learn not to jump to conclusions and constantly reminding myself to ask before jumping to conclusions...it hasnt been perfected yet but getting there. My point is, if there were no controversial topics here on AD, I wouldnt have learned to try to read POVs with a more objective view. For that, I thank the heated discussions for helping me to teach myself to stop and think after reading something I dont agree with. It is a good skill to develop.

If we had only safe topics here, it would kinda get boring here on AD, wouldnt it?

Like many of you, I dont like personal attacks on others or bickering but we are human after all, arent we?

I find the controversial topics very interesting...probably more than the ones that are not.

Just my 2 cents.

Do you prefer to have safe topics or have both?

I like to have both, but often its only a small group that participate in the controversial topics so sadly you end up rehashing the same things over and over and eventually you start beating a dead horse. I would go for it if we had a broad range of folks willing to participate and not use the forum to launch personal attacks against others.

I'm all for topics that get a little (or a lot) heated. That's a normal part of being human- and humans need to deal with that. Having a chance to debate "difficult" topics like religion doesn't have to mean having a chance to fight, if the people participating get to learning that disagreeing with someone doesn't mean you have to hate them too. :P

Good thought, Shel! :)

Yupp, we are just the people. There is no way our negative side effects would be prevent as we exist.

Other than to call "bullroar" on something particularly egregious, I like to keep out of online debates on religeon and politics, because people tend to lose control on those subjects when anonymous.

It's like on the road, I pull over and let the ones full of rage go endanger someone else.

Like courteous driving, persuasive argument has well-established rules, but so many here and at other sites don't those simple rules or discard them to dissolve into petty bickering and name-calling that it's just not worth it.

I don't believe in censorship, either, but I understand closing off and rerouting from an intersection where the terminally ignorant cause way too many wrecks.

Yeah, and remember, those who post as being against this or that always have the option not to go in.....if they don't go in, then they have no problems, right? So why do some go in, anyway? Beats me!

My thoughts exactly....when I see those threads that I usually debate (or sometimes bicker ..I am not perfect! LOL)in that have someone post in who are not the usual posters, it makes it more fun. I wish the group that participate in the controversial topics to be larger but not everyone is interested. LOL! :)

Curiosity killed the cat. :)

Oh, you're right. I'm as curious as the next cat. I read all posts, even those by the few crazies on their mission to put down a person or a group. You can usually tell by how those dingbats word their attacks.

I don't mean to speak for Tousi, but by "go in," I took him to mean to go into their endless lose-lose fights.

I read, shake my head, and go find something saner.

My mom always taught us never ever discuss religion, poltics, or abortion at the dinner table. LOL!

Yeah... i agree with you... i was tired of bashing and bickering....

Let's hopefully goes out smooth for controversial subforums/catergories.. but myself isn't perfect may sometimes bitchy or nice....

Least I'm not perfect this planet! :D
as same included yourself too.

I think the problem is, with those controversial issues, a lot of people are taking it personal. Granted, I understand that some issues are a lot close to home to some of us than it is for others but to do it accordingly, it should be with respect. It is ok to agree to disagree but it does not mean that we have to badger into it and say "it's my way or the highway" or to say "I'm right, You're wrong." It doesn't work like this.

Sure, the controversial issues are interesting and a good read. It gets one's point across but when it comes to the point where flaming/bashings/enticing others -- that is when it turns ugly.

Sometime it's not that hard to hold it back in when you're wanting to say a word or two about a specific topic but then, when it comes to the point of taking everything personally that is when you need to step back a bit and to think before the words starts flying out.

Not only that....but we all want to have the 'last word'.

Agreed. Sure, It might feel good to have the last word of the conversation but does it mean that it's all worth the while? It depends. If it is directed at nowhere, then it's best to know when to stop instead of getting to the point where it will be derailing.

I've been around here for a while and I can tell you a thing or two, I've seen some very good threads that went out of hand just because things were taken personally. Sometime it isn't meant to be directed at a person or at a specific thing. To some people, it is easier to resort to the insults instead of approaching it in a different way.

Maybe that's you but I don't agree; I take those kinds of threads as opportunities for all of us to grow or learn something as well as appreciate other perspectives and TRY to respect them.

Maybe the reason why the Religion thread won't be re-opened is because the powers to be may be the ......anti-Christ? :eek3:

Just kidding! :giggle:
