If you went out on your own, it wouldn't matter if you want to spend $13 on your meal. I would like to know what it's like with friends. For example, maybe you sense that your friend doesn't much money. You figure that he may spend $7 on his/her meal. You don't want to show off by spending $13 on your meal. You don't want to make your friend look bad.

Do you get in situations like this and what do you do ?

I am little bit worried about my money because my friend has been staying with me for little more than a week. He has a lot of money so he likes to go out to eat every day. I don't want to tell him that I don't have money to eat out everyday.

I don't have a lot of money, but I would try to make sure if I was out with someone, never to buy more than they could afford either so they wouldn't feel bad.

And.. you do not want to start cooking because then you know you will have to blast him out of there with dyn-o-mite. So now he is amazed at how little you eat.
So how is the weight loss program going? :P Hang in there. There is a reason you do not want to mention money so the alternative is to dodge and weave and eat breakfast cereal and vitamins for a while. The storm will pass and hey who among us cannot afford to lose a little weight after a long winter?

I always liked the story of the great stand up comics of yesteryear weekly meetup at the Algonquin Club. In memory of the struggle to make it during the Great Depression they would have bowls of boiling hot water, Ketchup, and crackers, brought to the round table. Greats like George Burns and Bob Hope would make Ketchup soup shaking great dollops of Ketchup into the hot water and stirring it in. There would be huge creativity happening as well, jokes, gags, funny stories along with the cracker crumbs and soup slurping.
Millionaires all they did not forget what it was like when they were foolish enough and hungry enough to think they could make it to the top.

I always remember George Burn's comment on eating, " I was never a big knife and fork man.." Probably the secret to his great longevity.

In spite of all the great medical care, vitamins, and exercise plans the best known way to increase life span in the modern age is to eat less. Says the guy who eats like a starving field hand.

My friends and i take turns. If one doesnt have enough then the rest of us pay for it.

You should tell him the truth about it. SInce you live in your own home and take care of your budget. He s visiting you and he didnt understand that part.

I never think about that..usually my friends whom I go out with can afford the meals I can afford.

Let your friend go out by himself?

Since he's staying at your house (for free, I assume), he should treat you to some meals out. :)

I wish more people felt this way. I use to go out group of women and they all had a drink or two and wanted to split the bill . I did not like this b/c I did not have a drink , I only had water with my meals to save $$$.
I will split the bill when I go out with my daughter and grandchild.

You should go out with your friend and when the bill come say " How silly of me I left my money and credit cards at home" Your friend should get the hint. I stayed with some friends in OK. and when we went out to eat I tried to help pay for my food. Maybe your friend has a lot if $$$ b/c he is free loading of all his friends and not paying for rent etc.

Just be honest with him and if he can't handle that then you know its time to do something about him.

Whenever I get in a situation like this, I usually offer to help pay the difference. Sometime, we take turns paying our meals. It usually works out well for us.

He is just visiting me. He told me that he have to go home to pay his rent. I don't have to tell him after all.

I took a friend out for my birthday, she said she'd never seen a place that expensive and felt self conscious. I told her not to worry, it's a special occasion so I am treating myself as well as you, get whatever you like and just relax. It was fine.

I go out to eat with a bunch most Sundays. The places we go don't have any problem doing separate checks so this is never an issue. How much any individual spends varies greatly from week to week depending on such things as how hungry they are or if they have a different size meal planned for the evening. Also, none of us hesitate to ask for a to go carton if we have leftovers. In fact, much of the time we are asked if we want one.

I am usually one of the ones that gets a larger meal as I prefer my main meal of the day at noon regardless of if I am preparing it or at a restaurant.
