We had a deaf ferret when our kids were young! I loved that guy, but he never really learned to sign.
He responded to foot stomps and the most basic gestures, but never attained fluency. 
For the OP, the ferret was deaf due to Waardenburg and used no assistive technology. He was very happy and emotionally stable.
