Cochlear implants Truth or Dare

Advantages include:

1. Communication - Implants allow individuals with profound hearing loss or complete deafness a means of hearing sound. It enables them to communicate fully, as well as use a telephone. (WOW is all I have to say about that!)

Partially true. Most people with CI can't hear enough to understand every word on the phone. It does allow the completely deaf a means of hearing sound. However most profoundly deaf are able to get access to sounds with todays powerful HAs and we are perfectly capable of communicating fully by reading lips.

2. Easy Care - There is no cleaning or special care needed as with hearing aids. Ear mold, which can sometimes occur with hearing aids, is not a problem.

Wrong! You must take special care and keep your external CI speech processor clean of moisture, dirt, dust, oils or it can stop working just like my HAs. Ear molds always occurs with HAs and it's never a problem! You need an ear mold that properly fits in your ear or youll get nothing but feedback!

3. Improved learning - For children with hearing loss and deafness, implants enhance their ability to learn. It improves their total communication and speech. A child that may have great difficulty in the hearing world can have a normal, productive life and be able to learn quickly with minimal delays or problems.

I did just fine being born deaf. I had no learning delays and my IQ is above average. My speech is near perfect and im great at reading lips so others can communicate with me with very few repeats. I could understand CI helping those with no residual hearing, but I have residual hearing that HAs were able to amplify just fine! Well today not so great but that will change in a few years ;)
