Hello! I'm Catherine. I'm hearing. I was watching this video on youtube, it was called "Deaf Family finds themselves torn between Deaf and Hearing Worlds". It was a whole dilemma on Cochlear Implants. It had two different families; but related to each other. One hearing parents wanted their baby to get a Cochlear Implant and everyone in the family and friends of the Deaf community felt that was wrong. The brother of the family who is Deaf and his wife and 3 children are all Deaf; his 5 year old daughter wants one. It was this huge dilemma. I felt kind of upset as well. Some of the children with Cochlear Implants could talk well others couldn't. Some of the children didn't even know what American Sign Language was. I felt that If I had a child who was deaf I wouldn't get them a Cochlear Implant. I felt that my child should be brought up in the Deaf community; learn American Sign Language and see the beauty of the Deaf culture. I was wondering from everyone on here how they felt about it; Do you dislike it? Would you get it for your child? Why and why not?

Thank you!

Welcome to AD. There are many threads here you can read to learn more.

I have no comment about the sound and fury. I know the father and the father's Deaf sister as we all went to the same school. They have been through too much going on about it. Glad its over now.

Oh wow! Thanks GrendelQ. I did realize it was quite older. It just wasn't called that but I will check out the links. I have been reading threads there's just so much I can't read them all. But I just felt one way I was wondering how each person felt about it; everyone feels different.

That's Sound and Fury (2001).

The five year old is now 18: Student Athlete Spotlight: Heather Artinian.

She is at Georgetown University. Interview with Heather Artinian.

My avast! anti-virus software says it stopped a trojan from the site with the "Interview of Heather Artinian". I know there are sometimes false alarms but I would rather be safe than sorry so did not try to load it anyway.

Went on to discover that it said it blocked a trojan but then the rest of the site loaded so I got to read the interview. I found it very interesting.

It DOES seem like the CI controversy has died down quite a bit. Did you know that when hearing aids were first introduced a lot of Deafies were against them too?
And you know, having a CI or functioning as HOH doesn't nessearily preclude learning ASL and being Deaf. There are still CI kids and functionally hoh kids at Deaf Schools you know.

And gosh, look how fast things have changed in 13 years, in terms of attitudes towards CIs.

I've been learning about that yes; about the CI kids at Deaf Schools. I've been learning a lot about everything now. No I had no idea about when hearing aids were first introduced. Thanks for letting me kno about that. I definitely know it doesn't mean you cannot learn ASL; but I mean about those girls that were in the video. They didn't know how to sign or anything about that. I feel that the child should learn it. Having a Cochlear Implant doesn't mean you are not Deaf it just helps you to hear better. I understand that. I just don't understand why the parents wouldn't help that child learn more about their Deafness or even help them learn American Sign Language.

I already debate experience research once time many time debate too many often I knew!

Request: please refer to these kids as kids who use CI or users of CI and not CI kids. They are more than their CI.

"Never mind" is a phrase that irritates D/deaf people. I wouldn't use it if I were trying to form friendships and gain trust.

I agree you trust to important to prove 100 % opinion 50 fair 50 debate
agree to people or disagree or agree

I observed it open mind

never mind means on okay, but if suppose worth increase your best strong trust and friendship!
