Cochlear Implant Comparison - By Jim Ellis

This is good information. The only thing that I would mention is that this as with any technology is dynamic. The information here may become outdated as new products emerge. Within a month or so of my son getting his first CI, a new one was released which had a dual electrode array. He got the new one but unfortunatly neither of them worked for him.

Mod please make this sticky!

Thanks for the link . As far as I see, Advanced Bionics seems a little more advanced than the other implants especially for the fact that it has more channels and this could make music more enjoyable.

I don't mean to split hairs, but the AB CI does not have more "channels." They are more accurately referred to as "spectral bands." The AB website previously referred to F120 as having 120 channels, but since this is inaccurate, that information has been changed to 120 spectral bands:

Thanks for posting this website Boult! This website is one of the most accurate comparisons that I've seen on the 3 implant brands. :)

Thanks for the link,Hear Again :) I understand the concept much better now, anyways, advancements seems to be more helpful than before.

Highlands,

You're welcome. :) I agree -- CIs are getting better and better all of the time. AB's success with using 120 spectral bands can only mean more improvements for *all* CI users!

That's true. I guess other CI manufacturers will be offering smilar or better technologies sooner or later :) Perhaps,I'll be one of future CIers :D

Highlands,

I've always said that competition between the 3 implant companies is a good thing. It always seems that when one company makes improvements to software and/or the external components, the others follow suit.
When you feel the time is right for you to receive a CI, I wish you all the best! Getting CIs was one of the best decisions I've ever made! :)

(Thanks to Bob for another head up to this document provided by Jim Ellis as he says this below...)

Anyway, I have researched both issues carefully, and already have sent the
results, in the form of links, to Jim Ellis for update of the chart.

I'll make this a learning experience, if you will, by now sharing the links
I sent to Jim:

* The Fall 2006 Reliability Report from Advanced Bionics, that showed an
impressive 99.9% one-year CSR in the latest HiRes
90K implants
http://www.bionicear.com/printables/reliabilityreport2006fall.pdf

* Features of the next generation Freedom BTE from Cochlear, including the
rechargeable battery option and the Mini-BTE processor, which is unique,
using only 2 type 675 cells.

Class is dismissed!

ROFL!!!

Thanks Boult,
good info.

With only MedEl and Cochlear available, the choice for us would still be the same.

Hope parents will be able to reach that information....
