You could say that the garbage disposal is one of the great inventions of the 20th century -- that is, after the internet, spaceshuttle and artificial intelligence of course. Because when you don't know what to do with that three-day old salad, the garbage disposal will take care of it. If you're feeling too lazy to scrape your plate before you wash it, don't worry, the disposal has got your back.

Of course, you don't want to put just anything down the drain, but the magical way this disposal system works (which this video explains) lets you get away with a lot.

But after a number of leftover dinners you had the disposal deal with, it can start to get a little gross. And, it needs to be cleaned. Of course you don't want to stick your hand in there and give it a scrub, that could be extremely dangerous. Luckily, there are a number of ways to clean the disposal without risking dismemberment.

You can clean the garbage disposal with citrus, throwing down a slice or two, but we happen to think vinegar ice cubes are the best way to go. Not only do they freshen the smell of your disposal and thoroughly clean out the hard-to-get-to crevices, but the ice actually sharpens the blade. Simply freeze vinegar in an ice tray as you would water, and throw on down the drain when in need and turn on the disposal. Just be careful not to confuse these vinegar ice cubes for regular ice!

I'll be trying this today...already tried Bleach but after a few days the slight bad smell came back....No one else smelled it but me...(so knowing we deafies have a better sense of smell than most people do (hearing).....

Any other ideas?

My garbage disposal never get smelly , I don't put any meat down it and I spray a cleaner called Sun & Earth down it . It has orange in it and that help made it smell nice. I have a good sense of smell too so I know what you mean about smelling thing other people can't smell. I wish I could hear as good as I can smell or smell as bad as I can hear !

I just throw some baking soda down the drain and let it sit for a while. i don't put much down there anyway, so smell is not usually a problem. I used to put egg shells down to help sharpen the blades.

One of the worst things to put in a kitchen. Main problem is if the house has old cast iron or galvanized pipes for drain lines there is very little you can put down the disposal and unfortunately people think they are garbage cans and they can throw anything down them. Things you should not put down a disposal include: potato peels, carrot peels, celery, avocado's, orange peels, Banana peels, onions, artichokes, asparagus, lettuce, cabbage, corn husks, egg shells, meat with fat, rice, pasta, beans, cigarette butts, plant clippings, twist ties, chop sticks, etc. As you can see from the list there isn't much you can put down a disposal. Some of the worst clogs I have had to clean out of traps were rice, pasta, egg shells and potato peels and lets not even talk about meat scraps!

This said you can put orange peels down your garage disposal and it made it smell nice . I asked what I shouldn't put mine and I was told no bananas peels or bones , I never was told not to put pasta down it , that is new to me. I had put small pieces of chicken fat down mine by mistake and that won't go down and it will made it smell really bad . Carrot peels is new to me too , I been putting this down mine for years and had no trouble .

Tried the ice cubes with vinegar....and it worked!...Only downside of it all was the vinegar smell in my freezer...but that will go away in a day or so.
