What kind of Sports CI users be allow to participate?

According to my daughter's surgeon, all.

even roller derby?

My friend's surgeon told her NOT to join in roller derby. Her surgeon said, "it is very dangerous for her with her ci." she is upset about it. She decide not to take surgeon and audiolist's order. She is planning to join in roller derby next week. Her surgeon did say there are some sports that CI users should not join.

I d like to know what sports that kids can allow to join.

My CI audi at my eval said I could do cheer still just to be careful when I'm stunting cuz I could get kicked where the implant is...I don't qualify yet but I know other CI users who cheer competition level and level 5 and they do just fine:) I'd say tho that if its a really rough sport maybe wear head protection

I was told by our surgeon, CI Center, and by a representative at Cochlear Ltd that the only physical activity/sports limitation is that the device is validated to withstand pressure only up to a depth of 25 meters (82 feet) -- so no deep sea diving at depths lower than that.

Beyond that, the same judgments required by someone without a CI would apply. I think most surgeons would tell any parent of a child that roller derby is dangerous -- for anyone, CI or no :)

I agree.

Recently her surgeon took it too personally about it because surgeon said, "you can damage your ci and your health and it's too complicate to fix it."

I am concerned for deaf kids who got CI at the earliest age and would not be allow to play in some the certain many of sports. It hurts them that they may have talents for it and are not able to be allowed to join.

I don't know much about football can ci users play football as long as they wear helemt. Is it safe? I asked my hubby about it if he goes for playing football? He prefers not to damage his CI from wearing the helmet and playing football.

It's not complicated, it's just an explant and re-implantation.

So you consider that to be everyday, run of the mill activity? "No biggie...its just another surgery!" And there are many variable that need to be considered with re-implantation.

My son's school stopped having a football team because so many of the kids were getting implants and it was recommended that they not play. They had soccer and basketball, instead, as these are less contact.

Soccer is by and far not less contact. There is no headgear provided in this sport. I have witnessed many many concussion's due to players going for header's and players rifeling shots and the other player taking it to the head. I played soccer from the time I was 7 yrs old up untill I was 18 years old. It is still a fully contact sport with no protective gear.

Oh, that's not too good. I would not like that!

According to the physicians, it is less contact, and less violent contact. The whole purpose of football is physical contact. Not so with soccer. If it is
full contact" in the way that football is, some ref is not calling fouls.

Just letting you know what their reasoning was.

Did you watch any of the world cup this year? It is a full contact sport in which players are competeing for ball control. When the ball goes up in the air two players or more are competeing to get the ball.. which requires no hands. so they use their heads to acieve this. In some cases the players heads to clash and its very possible to smack the side of the head where the implant is located. It's also possible to have a ball kicked very hard and smack the side of the head and do some serious damage. I was contemplating getting back into the sport but now with my CI its just not worth the risk due to all the injurys I have witnessed over my 11 years of playing.
