This is a hypotetical question.

Suppose CIs became so good they could provide sounds that are better than the average hearing person can hear. If implanted early, it would help making it easier to converse in noisy environment, get a richer nature experience with sounds, better locate for example faults in car engines, and perhaps becoming better soldier or cop in life saving situations, do you think implanting hearing toddlers is a cool idea?

Why or why not?

No, because the hearing toddler already has useful hearing and can utilise the hearing skills he/she currently has to transfer to using this super CI later in adulthood if they choose to go down that path. There is also the issue that residual hearing could be lost and the hearing toddler has pretty good residual hearing.

I think there is a difference between almost imcomplete absence of a sense compared to giving someone a super duper sense. And this is a decision that should be made in adulthood, since it relates to things like specialist career choices rather than enhancing everyday one on one conversation skills in many aspects of life and such the like.

I think that CIs in children should only be considered if it means that there is no real choice for them when they reach adulthood due to lack of hearing stimulation, so if they do well with HAs then leave it to adulthood.

Just my opinion!

I wrote "If implanted early, ..". Like suppose the hearing child would get a super listening skill only IF implanted early, would you do it?

If that happens, then we would be making hearing babies deaf. The irony!!! LOL!

This summer, one man is thrust into a role he never bargained for...

He once was just a man with "normal" hearing, but no longer...

Well no. Super duper listening just for a few select occupations seems a bit pointless compared to enough hearing to develop speech in order to to be able to carry out every day one on one conversations with people who don't know sign.

:giggle: and with the obligatory damsel in distress around somewhere. I wonder what model car she drives.

Bionic super hearing would only serve a military purpose in this world.Theres no use for super hearing with implants unless it served a higher function outside of the regular world for someone else.

Hence,In the real world,it would be overkill.
