It is the auditory nerve that causes tinnitus, yes!

I had bad tinnitus after surgery if I lean too far or sideway it sound like super loud ROAR lol it went away in 4 weeks (on activation day) after that no ringing at all, pure silence....
Only time it will start back ringing is when I'm upset and crying it will ring really loud ROAR until I calmed down it stop. And I'm 1 year 6 months post CI.
Don't worry it will go away on your activation day :)
And you will still have tinnitus when you're upset/crying for rest of your life so its good excuse NOT to get upset, stay happy!

Tinnitus is caused by the "trauma" of ear surgery. Whenever the ear has been operated on in some fashion, it "recovers" by creating tinnitus.

But I thought I understood that a CI often gets rid of tinnitus?

Alley cat, When we had our CI operation it's the tramua that aggravates the tinntius, I however didn't have that but i had 15 years of tinntius in both ears. When we were switched on the CI, being more powerful than HA it's barely noticeable.
When my Ci is off the tinnitus is still there.

My tinnitus stopped right after the surgery and I was happy !! Sadly, it came back a few months later. Oh well. The sound of the tinnitus did change though, went from a hit pitch ringing to a lower pitch ringing...

After surgery I had a lot of tinnitus..till then I didn't know what it was!! I really suffered from them , I couldn't even sleep coz of them..

after a year they've gone finally away for good and I've been catching up on my sleep lately!!it varies from people to people..

The sound of my tinnitus has changed multiple times.

I've heard everything from a car engine turning over repeatedly, to a fan turned on low speed, high, medium or low pitched beep tones, many people talking although I can't understand the words, random tones, people screaming or shouting, ocean whooshing, music overlapping with people talking, 70s/80s music, the loud roar of a jet engine and an A/C fan running nonstop.

The sounds I cannot tolerate are hearing many people talking at once or screaming.

They confuse me into thinking I'm experiencing auditory hallucinations (which I do because of my bipolar), but they sound so similar.

Fortunately, my psychiatrist explained that when I am hallucinating, my voices will be very loud and understandable whereas tinnitus will be quieter and indistinguishable.

Lately my tinnitus has consisted of many people talking, shouting or screaming -- or the constant hum of an A/C fan.

The latter sound is one I've become used to and enjoy because it's very calming especially when I'm anxious or upset.

LoL! I wasn't upset at all. I just wonder why. It doesn't bother me. I like to hear a ringing. Hehehe

Thank you for helping!!! I don't have to worry. It was my first time to have tinnitus after recovery. I am looking forward to get hook up the sound processor on July 7th. I hope the ringing will go away. :)

Pinky,

Try not to worry. Chances are very likely that any tinnitus you have now will be masked (covered) by the sounds you hear with your CI.

I thought I was having problems with tinnitus when I was wearing my CI but it took me over a year to realize that what I was hearing is the warning sound that my batteries are bout to go dead.

I know how you feel deafskeptic. I don't mean to bring my bipolar into this, but it does relate to your post. I've been hearing voices since 1991 and when my tinnitus started acting up following both of my surgeries, I couldn't tell the difference between my voices and tinnitus. It wasn't until my psychiatrist explained that if I can understand what my voices are saying to me and they sound as if they are outside of my head, they are auditory hallucinations. If I can't or they sound as if they are taking place inside my head, it's tinnitus. Again, I apologize for mentioning mental illness, but I wanted to show how different sounds or perceptions can be easily confused with tinnitus. By the way, I also learned that I have musical tinnitus syndrome. My audi told me one way to deal with this is to listen to music so that it overlaps what I hear inside my head.
I've tried that before and it actually works.

I do have tinnitus time to time since I first had hearing aid then later I wear CI for 5 years now. Before I had CI, tinnitus usually high pitch whistle that fooled me into thinking that earmold is loose and I asked hearing person if they hear high pitch whistling, they said no so there my tinnitus!!! Until I got CI 5 years ago, It sound like loud low modulating smooth buzz like big propeller airplane passing by but goes away in about 15 min. Sometime high pitch sound sounded like big electric motor whine going on unloaded high speed. Few times I had rumbling sound for short times. Often, I removed my CI and let the tinnitus pass.

Most Tinnitus only last for short while. Sometime it last all day but manageable (some tinnitus sounded neat  ). Rarely, tinnitus are so loud that I stopped doing anything and sat down and bent over with my hand over head and relax (like I mentioned low modulating buzz sound can get really loud enough to have imagination vibration on my head). There are no pains but it's really annoying!! :giggle:

Catty

Has anyone tried Ginko Biloba for their tinnitus? I'm thinking about trying it but need to check with my doctors first to make sure it is safe to take.
