Chronic fatigue still an issue for air traffic controlers

What is no joke is that are the thousands of medical interns and nurses that are working sleep deprived in hospitals across the country and no one feels the need to do much about it.....

*shrug*

chronic fatigue. fact of life.

I don't understand why doctors and nurses have to work such long hours?

Lots of times ( and right now especially thanks to our special herp durp educational system and declining educations and don't even get me started on Obama care ) We are incredibly short staffed in the medical field. :(

My daughters best friend just graduated medical school with a whopping student debt of $230,000. USA makes it very difficult for med students. A freind in the UK went straight from high school into medical school and his education is free.

If one of my children wanted to go into the medical field I would have tried my best to talk them out of it. Life is too short.

I got lucky and had a lot of scholarships and well... my father... :ugh: To be honest, he helped a lot paying... Definitely a lot of it I busted my butt for and worked my arse off for scholarships and what not... but he did help a bit to offset what wasn't covered by scholarships... I am in almost no debt... I know kids I went to school with who aren't so lucky though. :ugh: They expect you to work these god awful hours and don't increase the pay yet you're working your entire life to pay back the debt? Good lord... I know doctors I work with that live in apartments... pretty messed up if you ask me....

hey, I know .. they should start getting some chronic sleep.

(problem solved)

How much is financial and how much is not wanting to have to bother with maintenance?

Not the same but my dad sold cars and people wanted to look at them when they were off so he never knew when he was going to get a call including at home. Between the unpredictable hours and unpredictable income from commissions my folks only owned a home when they couldn't find one to rent when Dad became part of a jukebox sales/service company during WW II.

I worked 12 hours on Sat & Sun as a health aide and I had to drive 100 miles
each day. Plus I had a second job to fill in hours I lost b/c my first company hired a lot of welfare mothers to save money. A health aide was killed on the job , she had a horrible auto accident and my company not did tell us , I found out from another health aide.

Being an air traffic controller is a really high stress job. Cutting the pay is not going to help them get and keep air traffic controllers. My first fiance's father was one, and he was dying to get into management in his late forties because the stress was killing him. That's how most air traffic controllers are. I met another one who was my landlord, and he said he quit because he couldn't take the stress anymore. Air traffic controllers have a shit ton of health problems due to stress.

I cannot imagine being an air traffic controller. Having to avoid mid-air collisions is scary !!

Yep, some of them got their jobs back (rehired) in 1986 and started all over again and the ban for the remaining strike participants was lifted by Clinton in 1993.

I was only 5 at the time though.

I do remember that!! I was only 11 at the time but it was BIG news.

Some of you might not remember or know this... but it happened during Reagan's administration in 1981:

Reagan fires 11,000 striking air traffic controllers Aug. 5, 1981

Professional Air Traffic Controllers Organization

It was one of the beginning for the busted unions for breaking a law.
Yes, I remember (I was 30 at the time). One of our friends got a job with the FAA during that time, and since he didn't strike it became his career until he recently retired. He wasn't an air traffic controller but in a support position to them.
