Hey all,
My university doesn't offer more than 4 semesters of ASL and I tested out of the first and am almost done with the second now. I would like to pursue some studies in ASL over the summer (there is nothing offered here in Buffalo) because I am still considering interpreting, teaching, etc. (plus I just love it so that's reason enough!). Rochester is the closest, but RIT is very expensive and I can't afford to study there this summer. University of Rochester doesn't have any classes in ASL this summer that I could find. My ASL teacher (she is deaf) thought there was another school in Rochester that had a large deaf community and a good ASL program, but she couldn't remember the name...(any thoughts on that one?)
She thought Gallaudet would be a good experience for me, as the class I'm in now is kinda slow for me; I'm learning new vocab, etc, but the students in the class aren't as comfortable with the language as I am, (I have been signing since I was young) so practicing signing and receptive skills is kinda limited. Gallaudet has their sessions "crammed" into 2 weeks and it would count as the "humanities credit" that I need to graduate anyway (I already have my language credit from my ASL course this semester). Are there any other programs out there I could look into? I don't mind traveling and dorming (I live alone, so the roommate experience would be a nice change, lol) but I'm wondering if anyone out there has some other suggestions? If I do end up going to Gallaudet for the 2 week summer session, has anyone been there during the summer and could give me a heads up as to what to expect by way of community, atmosphere, etc.? I think I am intimidated by the thought of GU because of all the media hype and the fact that I'm a hearing student.
Ultimately, I think what will benefit me the most is getting involved in some ASL meet ups near by and mingling with the Deaf community some (it's not very big here). Right now I would like more "schooling" in ASL, as well as anything that'll get me out of Buffalo!
Thanks for reading,
erica
