Yep, he's right.
Remember me asking you to keep your signature images under 500 x 100 pixels? Well, if we were to increase avatar sizes... then the signature images would have to be under 450 x 100 pixels.
This request has been made before and denied before.
When it comes to the number of pixels for images, increasing the size of images can increase the size of its memory exponentially. For instance, here are a few images that I've uploaded:
When you click on each, you'll notice that they are all the same animation image... but the memory size increases dramatically as it gets bigger. (Notice that 150 x 150 pixels is nearly twice bigger in memory size than 100 x 100 pixels?) Making it bigger will only limit the chances of members using bigger animated images. Leaving it at 100 x 100 will allow you to use more animation than you could at 150 x 150.
Not only that, it also makes us scroll the page more when we have bigger avatars. Will members want to scroll more just because everyone suddenly started using bigger avatars?
Making avatars wider will make the left column wider. Making the left column wider will make the right column narrower. Making the right column narrower will shorten the length of each line for our posts. Shortening the length of each line for our posts will increase the number of lines in our posts. Increasing the number of lines in our posts will lengthen the posts and threads. Lengthening out posts and threads will result to scrolling... and scrolling is a pain in the ass!
