its like a relay service, but the ohter person does not know there is a OP there, and they are quick there is almost no delay, there is a small keyboard under the numbers (not in the pics) that u can flip down

Ice....
That is a good looking piece of equipment but you didn't really say what its central purpose is. But that's a good thing, because, as a tester, you are not allowed to discuss it until the trial period is over and they make improvements to it before releasing it to the general public. Perhaps you did not know that? Look at the agreement you have......:D

SG, how do you think its supposed to be used, eh?

screw'em they can sue me ;p

central purpose? its a phone, it has a built-in relay center, so when u pick it up and dial it ALWAYS goes thru the relay center, unless u turn off the captions button (which means like, if u were hearing and just wanted to use it as a normal phone)

plus theres no GA (go ahead) stuff, this is all live, hearing ppl that i talk to (if they dont know me) have no idea that there is a OP there or that i am deaf, its alot quicker, there is no "explaining relay service" stuff that just slow u down

i havnt been able to get alot of use out of it but it seems like a winner,

coupe of dwnsides i dont like, if the phone is ringing, theres no output for like a seperate flasher, like on my older ultratec tty phone i have the second jack plugged into the AM-100 and that makes a siren light flash when the phone rings, so i can see it even if not looking at the phone

also no printer port or anything, i mean like someone else said this is more of a office phone i think

I have this phone as well and it is the ONLY phone I use now. Previously, I was using a complicated scheme to get the same functionality as CapTel. I dumped the regular TDD a long time ago because I got tired of the operator always being in the middle, all those GAs, all those explaining relay, etc, etc, etc. It annoyed many people to no end and I often got hung up on because everyone thought it was a telemarketing call .

Captel is FAR LESS intrusive than a regular TDD-VCO-RELAY combo and works much better.

I only wish CapTel works on a mobile PDA like the Treo 600.

I'm currently using the CapTel service myself -- it's great! It's still going through a trial process -- 14 states have it on a try-out basis to help CapTel Inc. and the state government to see if those states want to have it as a FULL relay service.

Someone asked what CapTel was: It's a amplified telephone with the additional feature of captioning added for the deaf or hard of hearing user to read from. It's like using the relay service, but FASTER and PRIVATE. The relay person repeats what the other person says using VOICE-RECOGNITION technology to make the captions appear on the phone. What makes this so great? Typing so SOOOO slow compared to talking.

So, the CapTel user would be able to call a hearing person and appear to have become hearing again! There is no need to have anyone announce that you're using the relay service because conversation is faster and there are no GA or SK's. I've called my wife and she was amazed that I wasn't asking her to repeat after every pause in the conversation. So, that's what CapTel is.

If you think CapTel is for yourself and want to try it out, they need people who are willing to test it for phone issues and stuff. CapTel Inc can be reached at service@ultratec.com. Be aware that you need to be:

1) Deaf or HoH
2) Willing to fill out response forms, applications, and surveys whenever they ask for your feedback
3) Willing to put up with a device that is always improving and may not work exactly the way you want until you TELL THEM WHAT YOU WANT!
