Canada is perfect...that's why so many celebs want to move there...and France. It's so much more civilized than us losers here in the States.....:iobarf:

Laura

Seriously, Kayne and Kim should have sterilized before they made a baby and named it "North West." What egotistical asses....both of them.

I DO think that the OPTION of sterilizing someone with a mental disabilty should still be an option. I don't think it should be a wholesale thing (ie sterilize all mentally disabled women) BUT, it should still be an OPTION since women and men with mental disabilties may not be able to make the best decisions or even function fully as adults.....I mean can you imagine an 8 year old being a mother or a father? Enough said!
It really does scare me the fact that there are people out there who would take advantage of mentally disabled people.......I mean this is a population where they think anyone who smiles at them is a friend. .....I know of a case where a mentally disabled girl was taken advantage of someone whom she thought was a boyfriend. I mean this IS a population that really does need to be protected......

DD, you're painting a very broad picture again.

I disagree with having the "option" of sterilization for people with cognitive disabilities.

I do know that Canada, like the U.S., has a very sad history when it comes to First Nations people

Technically it is an option. In a case like that the parents would have the care of their child, they could choose to have her have tubes tied or whatever, their son have a vasectomy. The option is always there, but mandatory sterilization of an entire group of people is disgusting.

USA had dark history too.
Before around 1970s, marriage of mixed races was illegal. In early 1930s and after USA used to do lobotomies on mentally ill patients.

Times change people

yep, quite hard to believe that now...indeed it has had changed ALOT!

but there are also many things that hasnt changed, like the harm from the past are still affecting many, the violence and hatred are still kicking...only that the 'law has changed somewhat only in blanket terms or in other cases in miniscules tweaks as in 'can not ..but..only if's...' blah blah,,,in hwich cases,,,it might be harder to get bank loans unless you had 5 x more in the bank or such...(to cover collatoral damages or insurances costs), ..like these things might still operate in a racist form...

but overall, that marriage bit is HUGE change no doubt!

Here's a TV movie that might change your perspectives of forced sterilization. It's called "Against Her Will : The Carrie Buck Story" starring Melissa Gilbert and Marlee Matlin. TBH, I feel that it is wrong, forced sterilization that is, regardless of which country accepted it or not in the past. I am from Canada and I will say that NO country is perfect and every country has skeletons in their closet.
Anyway, you might be able to find it on youtube. It's a really good movie though!
