SPOTLIGHT ON:
CHRISTOPHER BLEDSOE
Christopher is VERY involved in the Deaf community — especially in the Goshen area!
Christopher, who is hearing, has over 10 years experience in interpreting and teaching sign language classes. He has taught in Massachusetts, Mississippi, and New York, as well as in Indiana. He has a DVD out, called “ASL the Fun Way”.
Christopher recently set up Goshen’s Deaf Chat Coffee, which is similar to Fort Wayne’s two Deaf Chat Coffee sites. Goshen’s has their Deaf Chat Coffees on the 1st Saturday of every month, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Starbucks, located inside of Martin’s Supermarket on Bashor Rd. There are at least 20-25 people that show up — including ASL students from Goshen College and Bethel College. All participants, both hearing and deaf, use sign language to communicate.
Christopher was instrumental in setting up the Deaf Association in Goshen, hoping to bridge the gap between the hearing world and the deaf world. Approximately 50 people help support this association.
Christopher is currently going through classes for National Interpreting Certification (NIC) set up through the League for the Blind & Disabled’s Outreach Training Program.
Christopher has MANY projects that he’s involved with! He teamed up with a ranch in Goshen, New Hope Farm, which takes care of abused horses. His assistant, Cindy Aenis, is doing formal training for national certification to help with horseback riding for the deaf community.
He also teaches dance lessons to deaf & hard-of-hearing people, and for Goshen College students. His specialty is swing, ballroom, salsa, hip-hop, and merengue.
Christopher is working on setting up a Big Brothers/Big Sister for the deaf & hard-of-hearing community.
Another way of involvement for Christopher is that he’s trying to help the deaf community get video phones for communication.
Christopher has several programs and worship services for the deaf community.
Christopher recently set up an after school program for deaf and hard-of-hearing children with disabilities in both Goshen and Elkhart. Please contact him if you’re interested.
Christopher LOVES being involved with the deaf community and he informed the editor that there is no time for sleep—he’s too busy!
