Caller ID Spoofing !

I got a phone call last night while I washing some dishes and it said it was a 'blocked name ' and showed a phone number , I picked my phone to stop the ringing . A few hours lately I realize that was MY phone number snowing up in my caller ID ! I called my phone company today
and learned about ' spoofing'! I was told it would not help to get a new phone # b/c telemarketer and con artists are able to get my number by running numbers until it made a phone call.
So someone can falsify a phone # and pretend to gas company saying you better pay your bill or heat will be turned off and be gone with your
$$$. Has anyone else gotten a 'spoofing' ID call yet ?

Had a very strange call the other evening too...it was just a combination of 10 or 12 numbers....???

Did they leave a message on your voicemail? The phone company told me they been getting calls from people complaining about 'spoofing ' calls .
We should never give out any credit info to any one claiming to be from a gas , electric company threating to turn off your heat or electricity . I feel real for elderly people living alone , they're easy targets for con artists . :( I wonder if I had a cell phone if that would stop me from getting weird called , some telemarketer got pissed off at me for asking his name and called me by full name and said "Go F yourself!" The phone was not able to trace the SOB phone call!

Been like that for years, nothing new really.

Its only (Phone) numbers, easy to spoofing without doing any dirty work... Machines do the dirty work itself.

XXX YYY ZZZZ

For each XXX (Area code) there is just a million numbers to spoofing and machine can do million numbers in no time really.

Will this is the first time I got a phone call showing my own phone # on
my caller ID .

My phone has called itself several times in the last year or so. Guess it just likes talking to itself.

I made a phone call this morning via my iphone connected to the car audio (the one built in to the GPS or bluetooth or however that works) to my husband as it was an emergency reminder for him, and I could not hear for the life of me what he was saying, but he was able to understand me. Anyways, as soon as we hung up, my phone rang and it said "unknown". I never, ever get any calls on my phone. That was so odd.

LOL LoveBlue.

Yep I have gotten calls like that from my own number. The spoofing trick is an old one going back many years as DHB said. Same with emails (I've gotten emails from myself too). I'm constantly getting these oddball calls- since I already usually ignore them/not answer phone calls anyway it's fine. I then go and google to see if there is any info on the number or not- 9 times out of 10 there's a litany of complaints about the same number.

Just so annoying when you have to weed these out from legitimate calls from people you know or potential employers (they usually leave voice mails but not always). You can block til the cows come home, wouldn't do a lot of good once your block list hits the max limit.

And that was on your cell too so I guess it does not matter what kind of phone you use , something odd is going to happen . I had made a phone call and after I hung up my phone it rang own it own , this has happen a few times , I didn't think it could happen on your phone too. I think I am going to start using a tin can and string to made calls. :giggle:
