BSL & ASL signs for deaf and hearing

In the 'being deaf rocks' picture, the ASL sign for deaf (finger touches ear then lips) is the same as the BSL sign for "hearing".

Have I got that right about the ASL sign?

our sign for deaf is index and second finger touches ear.

Our sign for hearing is index finger touches ear then lips.

I only just noticed this, as I haven't seen ASL signs before - but I did teach myself the ASL alphabet a couple of years ago - it's way faster than the BSL alphabet - I love it, I wish we had it over here!

Yes, it is signed that way by some. The sign that I use for deaf is done in the reverse way though. I usually sign deaf by first putting my index finger to my my mouth and then moving it to my ear.

I remember during my MSSD days that many Deaf would sign it this way: five hand handshape right next to the ear and then folding all four fingers across the palm. I haven't seen this sign in a long time.

It's really interesting the signs evolving over time. All languages do this I think.

I am not a royal groupie or royal basher, by any means, but I have always wondered - I observed Princess Diana at a d/D event (one of her passions/causes) the reporter said and she was speaking in BSL.
Was she skilled in BSL or just taught enough to get her through a public appearance?

Thanks

Don't know. I'm an antimonarchist myself, although I do think Diana was treated badly. When they come on the telly I usually switch off LOL :D
