As you may know, my girlfriend is hearing. She is planning to take ASL class in February along with her Mom. They both wants to be able to use more ASL to talk to me. We have been dating for about a year now. A lot of time, we've used paper and pencil to communicate. Last night, I told her that it's time for us to sign solely to each other. Let's not use paper and pen or our phone to communicate. Use hands as we've been going together for almost a year. Time to get better on ASL and the only way is to use it. The more you use ASL, the better you will get.

Last night, we had dinner at pizza hut and we signed without use of paper and pencil. I'm proud that she is getting better and better with ASL every time we talk. I'm glad I decided to not use paper and pencil any more. Let's get better by practicing.

She is also asking me about Deaf Culture customs. What to do and not to do in Deaf World. She wants to be part of my world. SHe feels that is very important because we would eventually want to marry and have kids. Also teach kids ASL and voice.

That's great! My hearing hubby has done the same although he is not totally ingrained into Deaf culture due to working with hearies all day.

Thank you. I'm sure it takes a lot of patience to teach ASL to SO in general. I'm proud that I stick with her as she works hard to get better and better. Some people learn fast. Some does not. It takes patience and hard work to get better on ASL.

My husband never took an ASL class. He learned from socializing with Deaf people and having Deaf roommates.

Good decision to cut out the pen and paper. As a language teacher, the only way to REALLY acquire a language is just by receiving messages in the language that you understand, and oodles of repetition of new words/phrases until they get stuck in the memory. She will learn a lot more this way, but it will still take time. That is so awesome her mom wants to take classes too. She must like you!
