This story has gone viral since yesterday - this comes from Facebook, a deaf couple who is well known across the deaf community in Australia, (more of from Sydney, Australia) - The couple have a little daughter that they have taken her to the hospital due to frequent seizures and health related issues - please take your time to read the story below. This has attracted 3,000 supporters, including myself to get the kids reunited to the deaf parents.

ATTENTION FAMILY AND FRIENDS. PLEASE TAKE THE TIME OUT TO READ THIS.

About a month ago our beautiful 2-month old niece, Akayla Hayward-Semenoff, suffered a seizure and was rushed to the hospital. The seizures continued at the hospital and it was found that Akayla had swelling on the brain due to internal bleeding. Because of this, our darling Akayla had to be operated on in the hopes of draining the fluid and reducing the swelling on the brain.

Following the operation, Akayla fell into a coma and the doctors said it could be months before she recovered and that there was a high chance of major brain damage.

Baby Akayla had been in and out of the doctors and hospitals for the past couple of months yet doctors failed to diagnose the problem until the seizures happened.

Fortunately, to the amazement of those involved, Akayla came out of her coma and began to recover much better than expected. However, there is still a very long road ahead of her and only time will tell the extent of the damage that has occurred.

Prior to all of this, Akayla’s father Anaru had finished at his job to move himself, his partner April and their children to be by Anaru’s older sister in Perth. The night before they were to depart on their journey, Akayla suffered her first seizure and was rushed to Westmead Hospital.

The doctors are now shifting the blame onto these two loving parents. Both Anaru & April are deaf, and to add to the injustice of this whole painful process, an interpreter was not provided until the meeting to tell them that their children would be taken. Unfortunately this meant that they didn’t fully realize what was happening until it was too late. All this has culminated in a heart-breaking situation that, for now, means little Akayla and her 5-year old brother Asher have been put into foster care awaiting the outcome of what could be very long court proceedings.

Anaru and April were observed by professionals at the hospital and it was their (the professionals) opinion that they were not to blame but still their children were taken. As any parent can imagine, they are hurting deeply.

To support our Anaru & April, we have turned to a concept called the “$1 Warrior”. We have set up an account and are sharing it with our family and friends in the hopes that they can donate just $1 each (or whatever they feel comfortable donating) to support in this difficult time and also share it amongst their networks. The more people it reaches, the more chances we have of being able to help our gorgeous little princess Akayla and her family through the tough future that they are now facing.

Please donate and share if you can and know that our sincere thanks and love goes out to you all.

Details to donate will be updated at a later time.

Very sad.

I cannot understand why their 2 children were taken into care.......there must be more to this story.

The infant had internal bleeding of it's brain, usually it's a sign of trauma or abuse. Unless they can diagnose it for other causes, they're just being cautious.

You have a valid point, SCBassist.

But the question is...

Did the doctors actually attempt to communicate with the Deaf parents? From what I have gathered thus far, there was no communication between the parents and the doctors, and the parents were left in the dark until the said meeting where they learnt their children would be taken away and placed in foster care.

Essentially, the public health system and its interpreter service in Australia is very dodgy, and have little to zero knowledge about rights of deaf people. Most interpreters refuse to work for the health interpreting service because of how the said service have treated deaf people. Deaf people are constantly frustrated and having to fight for their rights to get an interpreter for their medical appointments through the public health system. There's an interpreter booking system for PRIVATE medical appointments - ie; if you are a patient at a private hospital, then you can access that system to get an interpreter.

If you are a patient at a public hospital, you'd be fighting your doctors and the hospital's administration staff to get an interpreter for ALL of your appointments. The system needs to change.

And this kind of thing isn't the first time it's happened in Australia.

But it would had been nice if there was an interpreter for the parents so they knew what was going on.

Shezzbeav, good points were also made for an interpreter, but the article isn't thorough, so alot is left to speculate as to how it resulted in their children's removal. I'm not completely aware of the ability of a modern country like Australia's ability to provide an interpreter, if that's the case, your government needs to be aware of this serious issue. But in the meantime, some other method of communication should at least have been considered. Perhaps there is a system in place where in cases of suspect abuse (not blaming parents, but anything is possible), the doctors report straight to authorities instead of the parents? Serious misunderstandings resulting from how it was handled.
