My wife has been driving her van for a month now with no brakes, She finally agreed to let me fix them. Cost $350 to completely rebuild both front and new pads on the rears. The calipers got so hot the phynolic piston shattered and blew out the seals for a complete loss of fluid, then since one faild extra strain to the other prematurely wore it out and the rear brakes were barely doing their job under the extra stress. Enjoy...

Wow, I hope she learned her lesson.
No she hasn't. She was hit by a wreckless driver on the highway which shattered a brake pad on the drivers front, it started grinding and I looked at it and could have saved it for $60 with new pads and rotor on the front, but she refused to do so and wanted the other partys insurance to fix it, well they say they haven't gotten a police report after 5 weeks now and refuse to pay, so she kept driving it 80 miles a day to and from work, well once the piston shattered from heat the passenger side was working overtime to stop the van well it did the same, wore the pad down, metal to metal and shattered that one as well so a total loss of fluid to the front as well... now the rear brakes which only supply any vehicle with 10% stopping power were handling the complete job and she kept going through stops and nearly hitting people. I told her no matter what, she is driving an unsafe car and knowingly she will be arrested for whatever reasons when something happens ( and she still drove it) I guess she had a few close calls and finally asked me to fix it ( although I offered to do in numberous times before) now instead of $60 it cost well over and into the $350 mark for this mistake. Now it brakes hard, firm pedal, like a brand new car !

She's lucky she didn't harm anyone else (getting in a wreck) with her brakes going out. I'd suggest to inspect brakes every 6 months for heavy city driving with lots of stop and go. That way you can see how much life left in the pads. It's never safe to drive with the worn out brakes.

Good job getting it all replaced. :)

Wow... She should never wait to get it repaired. If it's me, I'd get the new brakes done and get reimbursed by insurance. If you have the info of the other driver who wrecked, you could go with the claims court if insurance refuse to pay for it.

Better safe than sorry, glad you get the brakes fixed before it gets worse.

Exactly what Ive been telling her but she wont listen to me, its a losing battle. Only reason she bit the bullet now was the rental car was costing her almost $100 a day. Now, she's back to driving like she stole it. Cant win, Cant lose.

I wonder if my new hearing aid can actually hear break squeal? It had been hard for me to hear in the past.

For most new cars today, breaks last a lot longer than old cars. Still, you should always have them checked.

thank god you got custdy of your children, not to be rude but someone with two cells short of half wit would not do this

My friend had an old school toyota truck with the non vented solid rotors. He took the hub apart to grease the wheel bearing and I noticed the rotor on the ground. I was amazed, it was only maybe 1/8" thick! But I was more shocked when he put it back on the truck during assembly. Now granted this truck couldn't make it over 45mph but still!

I replaced the front pads at the end of last summer and the rear pads at the start of winter. The front pads were gone, the rears were close but the rotors on the rear were fine ( ALL WHEEL DRIVE/4WHEEL DISK BRAKE SYSTEM) she drives hard... I freak out when she drives so I usually drive when we go anywhere, she road rages a lot. Gotta be first, speeds, got to get around this/that person. When I drive shes like "go around him, why you following that car...ect..." Im like good god, we will get there !

Solution: Get rid of your wife. Problem solved. I know your in process of divorce.

And your right, brakes are something nobody should take it lightly. I deal with brakes all the time and know that if one does not take care of it, two possibilities... They can seize and lock the brake which throws car out of control easily if on highway or medium speed traveling, or no brakes after all which is much worse. PLUS some states like here in NY, if you failed to take care of critical problem like brakes, bald tire, loosen tie rod and there is evidence that problem exists before the accident NYS will issue ticket for failure to maintain safety equipment and the fine isn't cheap, plus report to Insurance carrier which in turn will increase the rate of insurance premium.

Many years ago, my ex-mother-in-law asked me to take her to the doctor and said for me to drive her car....As we got on the expressway, I had to slow down for heavy traffic and the brakes went to the floor.......I yelled...you've got no brakes!...she said I know...just "pump them".....I had to weave in and out of traffic and went very slowly....

I told my ex-husband about it and he paid to get her brakes fixed....but she still drove it in the meantime....It was really crazy!

Even tho' I'm deaf, I can feel a "drag" when I apply the brakes...and knowing something is wrong....Anyone wanting to play "Russian Roulette" driving with bad brakes has gotta be a nut case....

Luckily your wife is OK....

I think I would have pulled over and called a tow truck. I would not continue driving a dangerous vehicle. Yikes!

(Another reason why I refuse to drive other people's vehicles--you don't know what to expect.)

Pardon me. I realize that I'm deaf and won't hear whether other cars on road had brake going out on them. I wanted to ask those of you who can hear. Can you hear and tell when the brakes go all way to the floor? Not in your car, but a car that you see on the road.

I figure that if someone hear a brake going down all way to floor on vehicle on highway that they may call patrol on errant driving on the road.

Ah yeah, theres already an accident report so if she had an accident shed get fined and the van impounded here...

No, you wont hear brakes give out...UNLESS they are grinding metal to metal like her van was... its a god awful noise !

That was totally reckless of your wife and you, you both put other drivers and their families at great risk ! There was a horrible accident in my city because the family allowed their 80 yo father to drive his car that had no brakes. And the old man end hitting kids and their parents that standing on the sidewalk. The man family knew the car needed work on it and did nothing .
