Boy force to eat alone for being late to school

It's great a that people help the parents get a new car but I think the school went way too far in punishing the boy by making him eat alone .

Wow...that's unreal. What kind of idiots would do that to a child? They needed to see the photo and mull on this?

I know , this really broke my heart when I saw it on the news . I would not let my child go to that school anymore and I would sues the school for child cruelty

Many schools will penalize your child for being late so it doesn't make any difference.

why don't they just fine the parents

no that is not a good idea to fine the parents when they have no money. i would think if the school need to have a meeting with the parents. If the parents dont care and its their responsibility for kids' consequences. I m sure when kid gets older, either kid cares or not, if kid cares then kid will ask for BUS so kid would get to school on time.

I think they get fine over here but someone else may know better than me.....this mother had a car so not that poor, you have those yellow bus why she not put kid on thar

Her car was not in good running condition. I don't know why she didn't use the yellow school bus. Good question. Maybe they didn't live outside the minimum distance. Some schools require the students to live one mile or more from the school before they can ride the bus. Or, maybe the mom doesn't get him out to the bus stop in time. :dunno:

get friendly with other parents I did and we each took it in turns take kids to school

HUH?? The parents had car trouble so how could they had taken turns with other parents ? I agree with Reba that the boy may live too close to school to us the school bus or the boy was using the bus and was getting bullied .
It would had made no sense to fines the parents , , they're poor and need that money to feed their kids and fix their car.

When my kids were little, I did take a neighbor's kids along on the ride to school as their mother didn't have a car and didn't drive.

It's not unheard of for people to behave decently.

I never understood why children in elementary school would be punished for being late to school since it's usually the parents' responsibility to get them up and going in the morning.

The other thing I can think of why perhaps one does not do the school bus is either that particular school does not participate in the bussing or maybe the kid goes to a school that does not have bus service where he lives. I THINK the school my nephew goes to does not provide bus service (or the district for that matter) because it is a very small school.

I'd be more upset if the kid was not allowed to eat if he was late...

At least two of you have brought up as a question why doesn't he ride a school bus?

The answer is in the article linked in the first post.
The boy is unable to ride the school bus because they live within a mile of the school, but they are unable to walk because the road is too busy.

I am not sure if they checked out exceptions for the traffic. I do not know and have not taken the time to look it up for just what it takes for that but do know the Illinois has a rule that recognizes traffic and other hazards. I suspect that other states have something similar.

Our school district charges $265 for a yearly bus pass. Gets expensive if you have a few kids.

I attended school in many states, and as I recall, California (high school in San Diego) was the only one I had to pay for bus transportation. I think the buses we rode looked like city buses, not yellow school buses.

I feel bad for the little boy and something needs to change if he is late for school often. It is the parents responsibility to get their children to school on time. Even being just a few minutes late can disrupt the whole class. A lot of people have health issues and still manage to be on time. Get out of bed 30 minutes earlier if you have to. Find a friend who can bring your kid to school and you do the pickup.
