I have gotten to wondering why they never mention bowl sizes, at least on the shows I watch, because they do vary. I know both different stand mixers and food processors come with different size bowls. Some that are shown look very large. I could see trying to do something and discover in the midst that everything will not fit in the appliance you have!

When you read a recipe, does it tell you what size bowl to put the ingredients in?

I'm spatially impaired, but I can generally determine what size bowl to use. I may go a size larger than I think just to be sure. Or I'll just move the stuff to a larger bowl if I decide I need a larger bowl while "in process".

I am not talking about the bowls used for hand mixing or with a hand mixer. I am talking about those that come with a stand mixer (Kitchen Aid, Hamilton Beach, Cuisinart, etc.) and food processors. Just did a bunch of searching and kept running across the instruction of "in the bowl of a stand mixer" with no mention of how large that bowl needs to be. And the bowl that comes with different mixers does vary in size.

Why is this different than the bowls used with hand mixers. I assume the stand mixers, etc, have different size bowls. Just pick the one that you think is the right size. (I don't have a stand mixer, food processor, etc). If any of these come with just one size bowl, then problem solved.

They come with special bowls that connect to the bottom of the stand to keep them from moving around. They do not interchange from brand to brand and even different models made by the same company take slightly different shape and size bowls.

The reason I brought up the mention of bowl size for these recipes is that it could need a bowl that is larger than your particular mixer has.

You could cut the recipe down.

Right IF you know that the original size will be too big for the bowl that comes with the appliance that you have. But I have yet to see one of these recipes presented on TV that says how big the bowl needs to be for the original size recipe.

Don't many of those cooking shows have online shows or versions with recipes? Maybe online they delve more into that on a show's website?

That is what I searched. See my post #3 quoted above yours.

I would think the largest bowl on any standard stand mixer would accommodate most recipes if need be. My mother has an old stand mixer with 3 sizes bowls. In over 30 years I don't think she ever had a problem with not having the 'right size' bowl.

If a recipe calls for larger amounts, time to invest in one of those industrial mixers you see in restaurants or diners!

My mom had an industrial stand mixer, the bowl was massive. Reason was, it could mix bread dough. I used it to make large batches of cookies for the holidays, I could mix 4 or 5 batches at once and be done with just baking the rest of the day while washing up everything I used to prepare. They are nice to have, not as messy as using a beater and bowl.

My advice is, get a big one, never know what youll get into.... better to be big enough that not big enough.
