It's like a stereotype that black people love watermelon and fried chicken.
It's come to be considered as degrading, it was an old fashioned picture of the "happy slave."
Germany
Just want to add that Black people who were being ridiculous or made to be feeling ashamed of the black seeds in the watermelons for spitting. White people make fun of them about that many years ago (probably around the turn of the century (1900, I think)). That is why Black people refuse to eat the watermelons because of what the White people were doing to them to poke fun at. This hurt their feelings very much. So I understand how they feel about that.
Yes, it is degrading.

My daughter is Black and she is fine about eating watermelon and I had a Black neighbor who ate fried chicken and she did not care what White people thought . Black people eat watermelon all the time , Black people are a lot stronger than you think .
I think people were more upset of the way the guy made Obama look in that cartoon than anything else.
I feel your statement is more about how you feel more than anything else.
It was horrible what happen to your people and was horrible what happen to my people in Germany , it was horrible how we treated American Japaneses in WW2 but people do not around with hurt feeling all the time.
Black people in the South still eat watermelon and fried chicken. In fact, they also grow and sell watermelon from their local farms. Fried chicken and collard greens are very popular here. When we eat with black friends they serve fried chicken as one of their favorite meals. Of course, fried chicken and watermelon are popular with all Southerners, no matter what skin color.
Now, cartoons mocking stereotypes of black people are insensitive and insulting, and intelligent people don't make up such cartoons.

I should have said "it was degrading" when we are talking about in the old days that made fun of Black people eating the watermelons with spitting the black seeds out of the watermelons. I don't know about the Fried Chicken because I never read about that with them being poke fun or make them feel ashamed of the way they eat. You misunderstand that we are talking about back in the late 1800 to the turn of the century of 1900.
You are talking about your daughter who are in the 21st Century or 20th Century like 1999 before the turn of the 21st Century. She does not remember in the past what happen to the Black people back then.
Do you always have to jump into conclusions?
