Hello,
My name is Erin, and I live in Toronto, Canada. I want to apply to a university program for teachers of Deaf and Hard of Hearing students, but want to gain more knowledge. Can anyone recommend books or articles for me to read about deaf education or deaf culture?
A bit about me...
I have worked with people who were mentally delayed and deaf or hard of hearing for about 2 years (2001-2003), and I am taking "Signing Naturally" 1C right now. I am also looking for volunteer opportunities in Toronto, but haven't been able to find any related to education.
I would appreciate any help.
Thanks!

Hello Erin, have you tried going to Amazon.com for deaf education books?

If not, you can click here and it'll take you to book results for "deaf education."

Good luck.

Thanks Alex
I did try that, but there were over 500 titles! So I wanted to see what people here would suggest.

A few recommendations

The book For Hearing People Only is a good introduction, so is Deaf in America. The video series The Bravo Family was also used in my interpreting program. It's a series of videos or DVDs that goes over basic signs and aspects of Deaf life and culture. I think it's 15-20 hours and I'm not sure how many tapes or DVDs they're on now.

Another website to check out is harriscommunications.com. I'm not sure how their prices compare to amazon, but they specialize in Deaf/HoH. Good luck.
