Biden's son discharged from Navy after reportedly testing positive for cocaine
Published October 17, 2014 | FoxNews.com

The son of Vice President Joe Biden says he is “embarrassed” after being discharged from the Navy Reserve earlier this year --- reportedly after testing positive for cocaine.

The Wall Street Journal, citing people familiar with the matter, reported Thursday that Hunter Biden’s short-lived military career ended because he failed a drug test after reporting to his unit in 2013. According to the Wall Street Journal, the Navy discharged him in February of this year.

Biden said in a statement to Fox News that he respects the Navy’s decision but did not specify why he was discharged.

“It was the honor of my life to serve in the U.S. Navy, and I deeply regret and am embarrassed that my actions led to my administrative discharge,” he said. “I respect the Navy's decision. With the love and support of my family, I'm moving forward.”

Biden, 44, made the decision to join the military late in life. According to the Wall Street Journal, Biden was commissioned as an ensign in the Navy Reserve in 2013 after deciding the previous year to join the service as a public affairs officer.

However, Biden was given a drug test after reporting to his unit at Navy Public Affairs Support Element East in Norfolk, Va. and tested positive for cocaine, the Wall Street Journal reported. According to the paper, the Navy would not specify what sort of discharge he was given.

Vice President Biden spoke about his son’s decision to join the Navy late in life at the American Legion’s Salute to Heroes Inaugural Ball in 2013, joking that his son’s decision was a result of poor judgment.

“We have a lot of bad judgment in my family,” Biden said. “My son over 40 just joined the Navy to be sworn in.”

Hunter Biden is a lawyer who serves as a managing partner for a Rosemont Seneca Partners, an investment firm. He made headlines earlier this year when he was hired to be a director and lawyer for a Ukraine company promoting energy independence from Moscow.

The move raised eyebrows, as Vice President Biden and others in the Obama administration have attempted to influence energy policies and other issues of the Ukrainian government as it battles Russia and pro-Russian separatists to control the county.

The vice president's spokeswoman, Kendra Barkoff, has said that Biden's son is a private citizen and a lawyer, and that Joe Biden "does not endorse any particular company and has no involvement with this company."

Fox News' Ed Henry contributed to this report.

What this article doesn't mention is that Biden had to get two waivers to join the Navy in the first place. One was an age waiver, and the other was a waiver for his previous cocaine use.

I'm also quizzical about why, as a lawyer, he didn't go for a JAG commission? Possibly be a PAO doesn't always require as stringent a background check?

As a JAG, he would have been commissioned at least a Lieutenant (0-3) instead of an Ensign (0-1). A 44-year-old Ensign is really unusual.

The article didn't say what kind of discharge he got but normally a drug-positive officer will not get an Honorable or even an Administrative discharge, although Biden claims he got an Administrative discharge. If he did, someone pulled some strings.

I served in Navy Public Affairs, so this especially bothers me.

TCS served in many administrative positions in the Navy, and he worked with the processing of drug testing, discharges, disciplinary hearings, etc., so he knows how the game plays.

I also wonder what is wrong with the guy? He tested positive almost immediately! He had no self-control?

Of course, the Navy took their sweet time giving him the boot, and releasing the information (he was discharged in February). Normally, this kind of stuff is public knowledge. TCS follows all the Navy news, the good, the bad, and ugly, and this was kept quiet.

I'm sure the position had to do with future political aspirations.

Biden's son can't resist giving up his coke. I think he gave up his 'political aspirations'.

How embarrassing for the Vice President of the United States.

They didnt keep it quiet long enough with elections on the horizon... but gas prices have dropped to nearly $2 a gallon here....lol

LOL! Yeah I bet they were trying to keep it quiet until after 2016 presidential election , I heard Biden may run. Gas is down here too not sure what it for now.

Unfortunately, this kind of things happen more than we want to know. People pull strings, do favors for VIP while the grunts that work their behind off five days a week, with more seniority and time served, get passed over. The more things change, the more they remain the same.

And the main stream liberal media didnt report this. CBS,MSNBC and CNN ignored this story. NBC NEWS only did 1 minute story about it. and ABC NEWS only did 3 minutes and they are all not the top story. The Top story all 3 networks was EBOLA. You see when ever theres an Republican in the scandal it make front page headlines and top story of the day on Network news. Remember George W Bush Valerie Plame scandal? That made top story of the day on all three TV news networks and it made front page headlines on the NY Times. But when a Democrat has a scandal or someone in the family in the news the media stays silent. Remember George W Bush daughters were drunk? Oh yeah the liberal media will carry that story. Go figure.

They only print good news if it favors the Dems and liberals; bad news is only printed if it involves slamming the Republicans. I thought everyone knew this?

My point is when you hear a republican senator or congressman son did drugs in the military this would be front page on NY Times as well all over on the network news top story of the day, Just like Bushs daughters were and Valerie Plame scandal. What if George Bush was a democrat? Then it would get ignored by the media.Just like what if Richard Nixon was a democrat? Watergate hearings wouldn't be bought up. Thats a fact

Take a look at the most recent story. Clinton's daughter just gave birth and it was a story on AOL for at least two weeks. One of the Bush's daughter gives birth or gets married and it's never published....maybe it's somewhere at the bottom of the page, two or three lines at most. Kerry's daughter once presented during the Oscars to roaring applaud.... The Bush daughters were never invited or asked to present at celebrity functions....much less given favorable press. That's the "unbiased, free speech" of the Liberal news at work.

I really do not think this is breaking news , the only reason you know about it b/c of his last is Biden .

I disagree. A democratic president was almost impeached for infidelity(something that is not illegal). And, the Plame scandel was a case of national security.

In fact, this story has been widely published:

In fact, Newt Gingrich, the man who tried to impeach him was having an affair and that was not reported:

That is not true at all! Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky cigar was all over the news. . Anthony Weiner posing in his tighty whites was on the news. The story Reba posted it about the VP son and the VP is a Dems .
