hi my son has 1 implant and we are going forth and getting the second soon. he went this morning for an abr and he has lost the remaining hearing he had left.he got his implant at 16 months and will probably get his second at a little over 2. he lost all his hearing in his short two years of life due to EVA>my ? is anyone have bi-laturals or children with bi laturals and what can i expect... thanks!!!

My daughter has bi+lateral CI.
However, she got them both at the same time + in 1 operation.

What to expect...
probably confusion at first, since the new CI will start stimulating a nerve that has not worked yet.. It is possible that he will have to wear the new one only in order to train that one more. That will cause frustration, since he might not be allowed to use the first CI. Loss of communication is a terrible thing.
But that's what I have seen here. Perhaps the first CI will just stay on and he is allowed to continue with 2..

But in the long run you will see a big improvement in hearing in noisy environment. That means that understanding speech will improve.. making life easier for you and him.

With our daughter.. she hears very well. Better than many hearing people. In a noisy kitchen, in a car, a restaurant, communicating with her is no problem.

Hope this helped a bit.

Awesome! The CIs really are wonderful for progressive losses!
Have you asked him if he wants a second one? Yes, I know he's young, but I still think that little kids should be formally asked if they want another one. After all, it IS his body.
It's good that you've waited til you're absolutly sure that he has no usable hearing. Hopefully, it might even improve his receptive speech skills.

Im just adding on to CLoggy, I was recently told at a Bilat CI forum, that they do not keep the 1st CI off as a way of adapting to the 2nd CI. They say to keep both on at at the same time. If there is a problem adjusting, they suggest only putting the 2nd CI for a limited time at first.

I keep meaning to post the info from the forum. I apoligze for not getting this done yet. It will probably have to wait until next week.
