Behold, the Power of Subaru: WRX STI tows semi out of snow

LOL, 4x4 cars and trucks can pull it. I read article about Jeep Liberty is capable of pulling Semi Tractor Trailer over the snowy hill.. I own Jeep Liberty Limited with 3.7liter engine.

Sabaru can do it too.

Sounds really GOOD for the transmission. I think Subaru makes a great car, but without low range gearing, its going to be limited.

Yes, Transmission is the key to pull, If tranny have low range gear, slow pull is better than quick pull. My friend told me that he drove his father's 1967 Chevrolet car that have manual stick shift with low ranging gear (his father swapped it from the truck). He went to the area where kids in 4x4 truck driving over puddle of mud and got stuck there. They tried to pull their truck out and can't unstuck it from mud. My friend told him that he could pull truck off the mud. Kids think it's impossible cuz it's a car with rear axle and truck is totally stuck. My friend told him he'll prove it it can be done. He backed up the car to near the muddy edge and put chain between Truck and car. He use low gear and let out clutch carefully and it pulled the truck completely out of mud. Kids were all shocked. He proved it and left. ::laugh2:

Pretty strong little car there....I think that car gets about 300 torque out of a turbocharged 4 cyl. :D

Most of the people have misunderstandings about the differences between 4WDs and AWDs

4WD use transfer case and AWD use transmission with differential.

4WD system.

AWD system.

Subaru STi's engine is much small than your Jeep engine.

2005 Sti is only 2.5L and flat-4 with turbocharging, 300 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque.

Only 4x4 low range gearing limited but AWD no limited.
I think you have that backwards. I can do more with my truck than an AWD Subaru because I have at least twice the gearing choices.

I wouldnt seriously consider taking a Subaru over rough terrain simply because it can't go slow enough. Even idling in first gear would be very hard on the car. And you don't have much power at idle.

Yes. I am considering to buy Subaru as my next car, because it is capable of doing almost anything than any other cars.

This is for example;

I grew up around rally-racing and mountain-racing... and the car of choice were majority-- Subaru for a long time and is still considered to be a favourite. And they were rough terrain they went through.

I remember I borrow Ford F150 from my father in law for carry the lumbers. I saw the icy at park a lot and I ignored it and I drove over it and truck got out of control like almost spin in half way but I got it in control so quick. I just like wow it's worse than my Subaru for icy road. That was happen last year.

My wife is very lucky. She drove to out of town for business. She drove her Ford Focus thru icy road on the highway and she was only drove 45MPH. Chevy silverado is front of her and it got out of control. It went spin then roll over and almost hit her. She was freak out and dodge it. She got heart beat so hard. I am happy that she is okay. It was happen in three days ago.

AWD requires less maintenance work than 4WD. AWD is considered to be less expensive than 4WD. 4WD in vehicles requires high maintenance work for it will easily break down if a person does not know how to use it effectively. 4WD can go up to 55 MPH, if more than 65 MPH then transfer case will blow up. 4WD’s maintenance cost around $100 for change new fluid at each 60,000 miles to 80,000 miles. From my experience, I see in a shop that’s how I know.

4WD has high torque that would be good for pulling heavy objects such as construction, farming, and driving through rocky terrain. That's I don't need. It's all depend what people need.

Subaru is everything.

You ignored the ice, that's really on you, not the truck.

That Silverado could have been in 2wd ... there is really no way to tell.

There is no 55 mph speed limit on my truck or a lot of other 4wd vehicles that I know of. I've gone 70 mph in 4wd with no problems. Nothing will blow up. I've been driving this truck for ten years.

My mom bought a Toyota Sienna minivan a few years ago. It comes in front wheel drive and AWD. To get AWD, it adds $5000 to the price. A part-time 5wd system is not going to be that expensive.

Glenn, please drive your vehicle for two months, on the highway with it stuck in 4WD hi.

Let me know how the transfer case is feeling like after that.

:)

You will love it! I own Subaru for almost 10 years and I love it. Handle is great that what I need.

Ive drove a newer turbocharged forester for an extended period of time. Handled real nice in mountains, I'll give you that. 130mph was very nice.

However, with my subaru experiences (life time) their brakes suck and I would always tell people to upgrade the brakes to something better.

5wd system? :hmm:

2WD should banned from icy road.

I don't believe you about 70mph in 4WD. I am sure you drove at 2H gear lever, not 4H gear lever. One of my friend's wife blow ford explorer's transfer case out at 60mph due H4.

Here a link about transfer case blow up at 70MPH.

Some Subaru's brake system suck but Sti's brake system is great!
