John Forbes Nash Jr., the brilliant Princeton University mathematician whose life story was the subject of the film "A Beautiful Mind," was killed with his wife Alicia on Saturday in a crash on the New Jersey Turnpike.

Nash was 86. Alicia Nash was 82. The couple lived in Princeton Junction.

Police said the two were in a taxi traveling southbound in the left lane of the turnpike when the driver of the Ford Crown Victoria lost control as he tried to pass a Chrysler in the center lane, crashing into a guard rail near Interchange 8A in Monroe Township, according to State Police Sgt. Gregory Williams.

The couple was ejected from the car, Williams said.

"It doesn't appear that they were wearing seatbelts," he said….

Russell Crowe, if you don't mind, RR :)
I loved this movie, too. shows one might be seriously disabled and still an AMAZING human being.

such a sad, needless thing to happen :(
May they RIP.

I was in a taxi once and it had no seatbelts ,the driver said you don't have to wear them in a taxi . I wonder if that was the case here.

A lot of the older taxis (or cars that became cabs...?) don't have seatbelts. I think the newer ones do have seatbelts- vaguely remember seeing them the last time I was in a taxi cab. Always wondered why taxis didn't have seatbelts.. maybe for the same reasons why school buses don't...:hmm:

The article above says that both of them were ejected from the taxi so I am guessing there were no seat belts. (in response to the above post)

Those must be really old taxis. Seatbelts were installed in cars during the 1950s-60s, and became mandatory in the US on Jan. 1, 1968. Only buses were exempt.

I would think...

I'm wondering if the taxi companies or whoever owns the cabs- at least older model ones- requested that they not be retrofitted with back seat seat belts, especially if they knew of the NY (and possibly other cities) law mentioned above.
