Earlier today, I received an unknown call from this number:

801-899-4170

This is a SCAM number claiming to be Chase Bank, and it is NOT Chase. For more info, go here:

That should help you out some.

Got same thing hundred thousands times. If I don't recognize the number, ignore em!

You can spread out the words to people who have limited knowledges about it anyway. I often got those numbers and ignore them, dont bother to reply it.

Thank you, but most people here are smart enough to distinguish between scammed phone calls and regular phone calls.

Yeah you should never do a survey over the phone. The person will start off asking you simple questions , like what TV shows you like to watch, how many time a week do eat out etc. They're trying to get relax and trust them and when that happen they start asking you personal information , like your bank's name and you SS # . I came home and found my ex husband taking a survey over the phone and I took the phone from him. There is a good reason he my EX husband.

Just to pose the question.. not what can they do, more like what is being done. I know many of these scam are trying to match up your phone number with getting a social security number out of people.

If for instance somehow it happened - a scammer gets your social security number, what do they do with it? In reality now not the what ifs.

Some people do try to use dead people SS # to collect SS checks , I guess they could try to hack into your bank account . You have to be really careful about taking calls from unknown callers. I got a call from a woman that said she was going survey and I told her "What a strange coincidence , I am doing a survey too, and asked the woman how many people did bother today ." The woman was speechless and I told will she had bother one so far and that is me! And I hung up. The woman was trained to only ask questions and when I asked her my question she did not know what to do.
I never got a call from that company again.

there are a crapload of scam phone numbers out there. Just a matter of being smart and not answering unknown numbers. Not an issue for me as incoming calls are automatically blocked on my cell phone. I very rarely get unknown numbers calling my relay number, which the operator deals with (they send me an email saying "this number tried calling" but never a message included).

These scams must work sometime. I am curious about what happens when they do work.

It is not necessarily stupidity. There are a lot of people all around the world armed with these cell phones. Many have some form of dementia. Some are just guileless. Some are simply irresponsible. Some are so lonely even talking to a phone scammer is a blessing to them.
