Boy Swallowed Small, Round Battery 3 Weeks Ago
SEATTLE -- A Wenatchee toddler is recovering after his mother said the battery he swallowed burned a hole in his esophagus, Seattle TV station KIRO reported.
Fourteen-month-old Kylen Carrillo swallowed the flat, round lithium battery three weeks ago, his mother, Shawna Carrillo, said.
"He just kept swallowing, like you do when you have something stuck in your throat," she said.
Doctors initially thought the object was a quarter or a nickel, but soon realized it was too thick.
Suspecting a battery, a surgeon removed it May 19 and noticed that the battery had already started to corrode.
Fearing damage to the boy's throat, doctors flew Kylen and his mother to Seattle Children's Hospital.
"It made a really big hole in his esophagus," Carillo said. "It definitely could have been fatal. It's very scary to read the stories where they have been fatal."
Kylen was expected to make a full recovery and will be released from the hospital this week.
Doctors hoped the hole in his esophagus will heal within the next two months.
