Commuters on Interstate 15 will have some company in between rush hour commutes. Caltrans is studying the durability and performance of its Barrier-Transfer Machines, also known as "zippers."

It's awesome, but it wouldn't work on I-80 (San Diego area) - they're always traffic on both sides!
 
That would be interesting to use on the DC and Baltimore beltways....

Cool, but if I were in California, especially Southern California, I'd just lane split through traffic as it's legal there.
 
Have that zipper in Auckland, New Zealand.. on the Auckland harbour bridge for years.

It does helps a lot during the busy traffic peak hours times for extra lanes.
 
Chicago has like expressway one way certain times and other way other times in middle of two highways

this might be cool idea for warmer climates but i dont see it working in icy conditions due to cars sliding w ice
