1. Don't sell cookies or candies, don't have your kids knocking door to door or solicit.
2. Buy only wallet size picture of your kid... don't need to buy picture every year.
3. Don't buy too much school supplies such as glue and stuff, kid might not need all of that.
4. Don't pay too much on after school activities, let your kid volunteer in something.
5. Prom, class ring? Tell your kid to get a job at McDonald's, let your kid know the value of money
1. Having your kid go out and door to door sale, costs you NOTHING. However if you chose to buy something from a child door to door selling for their school its for fund raising purposes. Its to help the school pay for extra frills and thrills for children. To take them on a field trip, to buy special art supplies for a special project, to pay to bring in a special speaker. All things that are going to help your child.
2. Even if you do not pay for the photo the child will have his photo taken for the class or solo photo to go into the yearbook. This is not a scam, the school makes no money off of this. In fact its the school who pays a local photographer from the area to come in and take these photos. When you buy photos, that money doesnt go to the school, that money goes to the photographer company that took the photos. Its not a scam, they are not lying to you.
3. If a teacher makes a list, the teacher will only put things on the list that the child is going to use. How much does a bottle of glue cost 25 cents? 40 cents? Of course dont go out and buy some one pound bottle of glue. Be sensible and just buy them the little supplies that the teacher asks. As well if you can not afford to buy school supplies, a lot of schools have charity drop offs where you can go pick up your supplies from a church charity for your child. Its not a scam, no one is trying to falsely get money from you.
4. Dont pay for after school activities? I agree that volunteering should be a factor in some of the childs after school activities, it helps them learn and grown to help others. But as well if your child wants to learn to play an instrument, or dance or play a sport, i believe its your duty as a parent to help them accomplish their goals. If you arent willing to spend a little bit of cash to make sure that your child is able to take part in other social activies with other kids then you shouldnt be a parent. Because being a parent is a full time and expensive job. Its a proven fact that having your child involved with art, music or other activities makes them develop better.
Also I rather be paying for my child to be in some activity then out on the street, in a gang or having no idea where my child is after school.
5. Prom and class rings are optional, but some things are all about the experience, and i think things like prom and class rings should be a joint effort or a reward for the child for doing good and completing their education. If money was tight, i would tell my child to get a job and I would try to split the cost of the ring or prom with them. If money wasnt so tight I would get it for them as a reward to let them know how very proud I am of all their accomplishments.
Lastly, Empress THESE THINGS ARE NOT SCAMS. A scam is when someone lies to you, or tries to con you into doing something that you would not normally do if you knew the full truth.
These are simply money saving techniques, in no WAY is paying for after school activities a scam.
