Hi Everyone,

I'm a mum of a gorgeous nearly 2yr old deaf boy. I've checked this site out a few times and just decided to join. I've been learning Auslan and my son has picked it up pretty well. I've been involved with the Deaf community here since my son was about 3 months old. At the start of this year his hearing loss deteriorated to a sev/pro level (it was much better when he was first born). At first i was completely against the idea of implanting him, it made my heart hurt to think about it. But over the last 10 months i have been researching heaps and talking to different people and in 2 weeks time we have our first appointment with Professor Gibson who is the ENT who performs the surgery here. (FYI he was trained by Graeme Clark the inventor of the multi channel CI).

I still feel apprehensive but i need more info and some questions answered. However one of my biggest concerns is how the community will treat us. They have become our friends and i know how happy they all were when we decided not to do the surgery. Now i don't know. I don't want to lose any of my friends. We moved to this town to be closer to the community for my son and just because we may implant him does not mean i want him to not be a part of that world nor will i ever stop signing, i've learnt enough to know how valuable the language is to a Deaf person.

Anyway i thought i may be able to get some advice and what not.

I also have a wonderful husband of 6 years and a beautiful 4 yr old boy who still struggles to understand it all but is getting there.

Sarah

Welcome Sarah Kaye!

I'm from Australia too and am a deaf adult. I was implanted by Prof Gibson six months ago and I cannot speak more highly of him. He has a nice friendly manner and technically he's great. I had absolutely no problems with my surgery.

Best wishes with your appointment.

:welcome: to AD

I found out that some countries, if they get a CI, the deaf culture turns on them cause they don't want to be deaf. It shouldn't matter if u want your son to hear or not, but the deaf culture thinks different in some places. In the states, it is fine to do that.

Welcome aboard to AllDeaf Aussie Mum.

Your brave to make a decision for your boy, please remember you and your boy comes first than what others think of.

Good Luck

Hello and welcome to Alldeaf! Indeed it takes much encouragement and love to do what you feel is best for your son...don't dwell too much on whether the community will be acceptable or not on the decisions you and your husband make, afterall, do they 'live' with your son, 'love' your son like you and your husband does? I didn't think so-- ;) Looks like you'll explore and research all possibilities and whatever you do decide to do, wishes you, your son, family the very best! :)

Anyhow, do enjoy your stay here in AD! ;)

Have a great day!

Hello Sarah Kaye,
Welcome to AD. You need to make the decision based on what you feel is the best for your son. Some might reject you, but I believe many will tolerate it and stay friends with you. Glad you & your boy learned AUSLAN. Good luck.
Cheers
