I'm curious if this has happened to other deaf people who have gotten a CI later on in life.

So, for I guess my whole life, when I am dreaming, I understand speech, but I don't hear anything. I just automatically understand everything other people say when they talk, and I can talk back. I hardly sign in my dreams, if I do sign in my dream it's only because there's a deaf person/persons in my dream. If Abel (my fiance) or some other deaf person is in my dream, I will sign. If the person in my dream is not deaf, I will usually talk and automatically understand everything the other person says. But there is no audio.

But...

The other night, I was dreaming, but instead of just automatically understanding everything hearing people say, there is audio too. This startled me, I woke up confused. I thought maybe I forgot to take my CI speech processor off before I went to sleep and that I had heard something in my apartment. I reach up to my left ear to take it off, but there is nothing on my ear. I was confused for a minute and then realized that I have audio in my dreams now. I think it's because I just recently got a CI.

I wonder if this has happened to others who have CIs too.

Interesting. I thought it was weird when I first started using ASL in my dreams. It must be VERY weird with starting to have audio in dreams.

Congrats, i think. :-/

Lucia,

What an interesting question! :)

After I lost my hearing in 1995, almost all of my dreams were devoid of sounds and voices. (In these dreams I communicated with others through tactile sign.)

However, ever since I received my first CI, my dreams started to have more sounds and voices in them. In fact, one of the very first dreams I had after being implanted involved my late mother in which I had a conversation with her and I could hear her voice as clear as day. (The last time I remember being able to hear my mother's voice as clearly as I did in this dream was back in 1985 when I received my first pair of BTE hearing aids.)

I've also noticed that my dreams have become more involved because of my ability to hear environmental sounds. In my dreams I've heard people whispering to me, birds singing, traffic, footsteps, the wind, rain, leaves rustling in the trees, etc.

Now that I have bilateral CIs, the audio in my dreams is stronger than it has ever been. In my dreams I'm never wearing my CIs, but I can still hear everything that is taking place around me. (Go figure. LOL!)

My dreams have "adapted" as my life has changed as well. I've even had incidents in my dreams now where I have to "change batteries" on my CI!!!

In my dreams, I am just like a hearing person.. I never had to use my hearing aids in my dreams :D

Dreams are mostly a representation of your day and memories. Some people claim they can have a dream and it will play out almost exactly the very next day (I've had this happen but not everything was accurate... it was like... 20% accurate.. could be coincidence) Then there's people who lost their legs who dream that they're running/walking. I dunno, dreams are a weird thing- also there's a tribe that believes dreams are the real world and while we're awake we're in a dream world. Fun facts.

A very interesting question...

I couldn't tell you if I have audio or not in my dreams. For one thing, I almost never remember them and if I remember anything...just the "flavor" of the dream.

Audio in dreams?

I guess it would depend on the individual.

It's like a person who is blind.

If a person was born deaf or blind, audio or visual is never experienced. So, it's left up to their imagination of what it sounds or looks like.

If a person became deaf or blind later in life, audio and visual is already implanted in memory. So, it's still experienced in dreams. :)

Vampy,

That's true. I was born blind, so I don't see in my dreams. Almost all of my dreams consist of me floating from one place to another. Sometimes I'm also using my guide dog or white cane. I couldn't tell you what colors I see because I don't have any reference point.

As for hearing in my dreams, I'm late deafened so it wasn't until I lost my hearing (to where I couldn't understand speech with hearing aids and an FM system) that sound disappeared from my dreams. In my dreams I communicated with others through tactile sign or a tactile interpreter.

Ever since I received my CIs, I hear sounds in my dreams quite vividly and clearly. I also communicate with others in my dreams using speech just as I did before I lost my hearing.

Yeah I have experienced that kind of weird things that come to me in a dream. Whenever Im awake, and doing something, sometimes I may be able to recall what was represented in the dream compared to what I was doing.

Deja vu's can be pretty weird. Oh btw I dont hear anything in my dreams. Most of the time I find myself speaking or reading in foreign languages even though I havent learned any of them when Im in an awake state. Sometimes you see weird-looking people when in a dream state. I experienced that many times seeing people looking like hammerhead sharks, and anything out of a horror movie even though the setting is pretty serene and full of light.

Dark half, the 20% accuracy would be pretty close to what we experience between a deja-vu and our awake-state activities.

I wear Ha and I still hear sounds in my dreams even tho i use sign language. Sometimes its quiet so i cant hear and other time i hear so depend on. Many times I have used sign languages. This is very interesting. I never thought of that till you say it. That made me think about my dreams but when i had one dream which i never forget where my cousin came to me 3 days after the freak accident tellng me she is ok. She want me to tell aunt and uncle she's fine and not for them to worry about her. she is real happy in heaven with God. She told me she didnt feel the pains but nayway when i saw her. we had telepathic connection till the end she was leaving.. she then signed _\m/ and was floating then change to white ball twoard the woods then disappeared. i woke up and found myself with tears.. i didnt hear sounds but telepahtic i guess all dreams are different... :)
