I will stick with stem cell treatment, it's safer than the use of viruses. I did read that scientists are working on inert cell capsules to carry DNA instead of viruses. No risk of infection that way.

Might wanna look up on the history of phage therapy. Majority of the viruses out there are not harmful to humans.
 
If I understand the article, virus is being used to protect hearing from future ototoxic efects and can help in hair cell differentiation when trying to regenerate hair cells.
