Not sure, English does paint the picture beautifully also if you think of a word in mental mind.
ASL is just straightforward physical mind. Which can be slightly embarrassing when hearing people try to read us.
I often feel somewhat bothered when I signed "name" in Czech sign, which is almost similar to ASL's "Catholic" sign, but with thumb emphasizing the cross on forehead instead of 'h' handshape (I'm agnostic Lutheran, not Catholic, so...)
But uhh, ASL vs. English... not sure. I prefer to use English often, and sometimes in ASL it can be a bit vague as of which the signer used specific English word in mental while signing.
I'd compare ASL to Chinese, because a sign can mean many words.
