Hey there! I am a senior INTP student, graduating in May. I am working on a project where our entire class has asked questions related to "life after graduation" and working as an ASL interpreter. We split up the questions by category and will come together and share the info we came up with. My questions were in the "misc" category.
I have some responses from interpreters in my area and my mentor, but would love to open this up to anyone who has an answer. (Side note, not asking you to "do my homework" because I already have what I need, but I always think that more opinions/thoughts/perspectives are better!)
Here is our list of questions:
1. Is it better to get more training (MA, other kind of INTP training) or better just go out there and dive into it?
2. Thoughts or suggestions about introductions (to the Deaf and hearing consumers), how to become more comfortable?
3. In your opinion what is the biggest mistake a new interpreter can make?
4. Thoughts and opinions about freelancing vs. working as a staff interpreter?
5. Thoughts and opinions about VRS, VRI, agency, freelance?
6. How can you seek work without stepping on toes/under cutting?
7. When do you declare yourself as a business?
8. In what kinds of settings (besides education) can a pre-cert interpreter expect to work? Agencies?
9. Can you appoint yourself as interpreter (if interpreters are hard to come by, and the deaf person wants you to)? How do I bill for that?
10. How to advertise self (as a pre-cert interpreter OR recent graduate from ITP)?
11. How do I advertise myself in general?
12. Church services – advertise yourself or use agency? Do you charge?
Thank you all in advance, I know you have wonderful advice and opinions! Once again, ANYONE who has answers, doesn't HAVE to be an interpreter. Thanks!!
