ASL Student in need of opinions about CI

Hello everyone. I am an ASL student and have to write a research paper on Cochlear Implants. I am wanting to get some feedback from the Deaf community about CI's. How does the community feel about them? Are they accepted? Any information you have on them would be greatly appriciated!

Just on a side note, I have been reading some of the posts on the site and never realized how i could relate to a lot of people. I have about 80% hearing loss in my left ear and only 15% loss in my right ear. I had spinal menengitis when i was 18 months old. I am very happy to know there are a lot of other people out there that have the same type of issues i have! I hate being in loud places because i can't hear anything. I have to have people looking at me and/or on my right side so i can hear them.

They are very well accepted and have become much better in recent years.
 
I am the hearing parent of a Deaf child who has a CI. We have never had a single bad comment about her getting a CI from our local Deaf community. They have been super supportive of our choice. Those on the internet are not that way as much....
 
I am not in any deaf community but I don't believe in CIs unless your hearing loss is at least 100db and your speech scores are less than 20%. I used to have 100db hearing loss and my parents said I could understand alot of speech(im guessing 50%), but of course not like a hearing person. With lipreading, I can understand 80%. It's standard procedure for people to first try the best HAs before getting CI, sadly some skip this step. 25% of those who got CI could have avoided the cost and risks of CI had they made more effort with properly fitting HAs which could given them so much sounds/speech they never woulda qualified for CI.

What the hell does that gotta do with how the Deaf community view CIs?

Anyway, I hardly notice people even have a CI... I don't even notice if they are wearing hearing aids. If they sign, then they are my comrades. If they don't... well... going to have to work around the communication barrier.

So really, I think in about 10 years time... you won't hear anyone griping about the ol' CIs.

What is the hell!?!? Please stop take it personal about don't believe in CI. You know nothing about deaf community. Why you're joined to "alldeaf" because you're not accept be deaf. You're in denial being profound hearing loss. You rather called hearing impaired yourself. TOPIC OFF!!!

This is thread for deaf community's view on CI. So leave it! GRRR @ you! I don't like you at all!
 
Chelsea, The deaf community is accept for people's choice CI for reason. The CI and HA are the same in deaf community. The best for CI people use ASL/spoken language. CI doesn't make us hearing. Just simple to hear a sound because hearing aids don't help with profound hearing loss.

I notice the 21 century have improve for deaf community accepted CI for reason. Some deaf community don't accept CI without ASL and other sign language.

I'm proud to be deaf with CI. I'm fluent in ASL. Good luck for you to research about cochlear implants for education. :)
 
Even in the last 5-6 years, the views on CIs have changed a lot. Ten years ago, a Deaf person would be disowned by their community and their Deaf family if they got a CI. Now? eh, not really an issue except for the hard liners. It is like any culture or society that is faced with fundamental change: it resists, then slowly accepts, and then finally it is a normal part of the culture. The cool thing with Deaf culture is that it is taking a far shorter time than controversial issues in hearing society (how long have we been bickering about women's rights and racial equality?). Implanting deaf babies is still controversial, however, but far less than it used to be.

I'm not really a member of a Deaf community, though I have several Deaf friends and am starting to sign more and more, but I will be an implant candidate soon, if I aren't already. My personal opinion, however, is that I wouldn't get one. I've accepted my deafness, and a CI is not going to magically make me hear again--it's just going to present new challenges--new benefits yes, but also new costs. I'm happy the way I am, but I don't think less of anyone who gets a CI.

There is A LOT of information you can dig up both here and on the internet. Use your school library's research tools.

I am not a member of deaf commuity either and I have CI. Over the year since i had CI i made alot more deaf friends with CI's (they are mostly born deaf of my age (30's) implanted over the last year. One of them is very strong BSL user and I very much doubt she'll stop, she loves it, it's who she is!!!

I not once had some one againist CI's, I do have few saying "I don't agree with CI" at that point I just say thats your decision and change the subject. I had a old school friend who I haven't seen for years, "L", she saw me at the CI stand at deaf world event. After greetings she said to me are you thinking of having CI, I signed to her nope as already got one, she said that CI would stop BSL, I guided her to my CI hearing therapist "A" who happen to be there.... "A" did a full BSL to "L"... "L's" face were a picture!!! "A" told "L" that the centre believes that people should have an access to either language. Now "L" went away with new perspective of CI's and BSL.

You have given me a lot of information and i'm finding more and more information on the internet. :) I have actually asked my mom if she had any of my hearing tests from elementary school because I want to know more about my hearing loss. I've never really thought about it because it's always been a part of me and the way I am.

But faire_jour you have to admit that it's changing quite a bit.
As for the OT........there are some hardcore anti CIers.......BUT as long as you're not all "high and mighty" about having them, you'll be accepted.

You're welcome. That's good for you to consider to get CI. You can keep research over the internet.. You can read people's CI user with blog website.

I used to be involve with deaf community before CI. Now I prefer to be in deaf and hearing world both. It's equal. Because I have deaf friends. I have hearing family and friends. That's good thing that my deaf friends accepted me to have CI. Because it's my choice to hear. The hearing aids doesn't help me at all.

You can come to AllDeaf to ask the question about CI and concern. CI user will be happy to answer your questions. Please be careful with people with against CI. Don't listen to them. It's your choice. Good luck!
